Embracing their Hollywood roots like never before, Sebastian Professional’s Shaper and Shaper Plus brands are preparing for their big screen debut in New Line Cinema’s July 2007 remake of the cult classic, “HAIRSPRAY!”.
As the official hairspray of “HAIRSPRAY!”, the iconic styling tool – a long time favorite among Hollywood hairdressers – will star as “Ultra Clutch” and perform behind-the-scenes and front-and-center to capture the film’s classic style.
“We’re so thrilled to be a part of this film and help shine the spotlight back on hairspray in such a fun way,” says John Moroney, Creative Director, Sebastian Professional North America. “The Sebastian brand has a deep-rooted and inspirational history in Hollywood and even today, there isn’t a set, trailer or green room that isn’t over-flowing with Shaper cans! It truly has stood the test of time.”

The role of “Ultra Clutch” was all encompassing. On-stage, Shaper starred alongside some of Hollywood’s brightest stars including Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, John Travolta, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron and many more. And on-set, as the original working hairspray, Shaper and Shaper Plus formulas were used to shape a variety of styles from beehives, to pony-tails to sleek bobs.
“Throughout the making of the film, there were so many looks and styles to the hair which required a product diverse enough to do it all,” says Judi Cooper-Sealy, the film’s lead Hair Designer and Department Head who worked daily with both Shaper and Shaper Plus. “While one scene required an up-do with strong hold for the dancing scenes, we also needed a spray that was workable for easy brushing and re-styling.”
To celebrate their close up, Shaper and Shaper Plus stepped into an exciting, custom-designed costume change. Beginning June 2007, Sebastian Professional is offering new, limited-edition cans of “Ultra Clutch” in both Shaper and Shaper Plus formulas. As the must-have hair item of the summer, look for the famous big can in a bright, new teal-green costume with pretty pink and cool, multi-colored “HAIRSPRAY!” graphics.
The fun doesn’t stop there! To get in on the “HAIRSPRAY!” action, consumers can log onto The dedicated Web site includes feature film content with behind-the-scenes footage, celebrity news and styling tips. Additionally, consumers can enter for a chance to win a variety of exciting prizes including a “VIP” trip for two to Hollywood complete with VIP passes to a movie premiere and a Sebastian makeover.
The limited-edition “Ultra Clutch” offering will be widely available at Trade Secrets, Ulta, Regis Salons and JC Penny and more than 35,000 professional salons nationwide beginning in June 2007.
