NYFW: Catch the Wave: Backstage at Chris Benz with John Ruidant of Redken

Nancy Lichtenstein is an awesome fashion writer & reporter. She and I are pretty much on the same page and I trust her gut instincts on how to approach a story or an event and give it a sort of flair or insider feel (wait till you see what else is coming!) She’s here to tell you some scoop on Chris Benz which it seems was not at Bryant Park (yay

My next stop at Fashion Week was downtown to Chelsea for Chris Benz at Drive-In Studios. This was a nice break from the tents and the location, a former garage that’s been turned into a video production studio, added a real sense of excitement to the event: when the show starts they use a clicker to open the big garage doors and everyone storms in!

I was there to interview John Ruidant of Redken, who’s been Chris Benz’s pick as lead stylist for a few years now; no one creates a flirtier or more feminine head of hair than John.
“The inspiration for the look was the playful textures and colors in the collection,” he said. “I wanted a mix of wavy and curly, with lots of texture that still has sporadic movement.”

To do this, first he did a power blow dry with Fabricate heat-activated texturizer. Then he sprayed Hot Sense to protect the hair from heat damage and add shine without buildup.

“Before the curling iron, I backcombed the hair with my fingers to create a rougher wave,” said John. “We don’t want smooth, we want a tougher look. Next, you haphazardly pick up a section of hair and run it around the iron, the messier the better.”
(I was in heaven at this point because the one thing my hair does well is big, messy waves; for once I’m in!)
After the texture was complete, he topped off the look with Forceful and Glass to provide hold and shine. Finally,
“I run my fingers through the hair, smooth it out a little bit and then pick the sections apart individually so the waves stand out.” John says “you can absolutely create this look at home because the use of the curling iron is purposely imprecise.”

That’s truly great news for me and anyone else whose hair tends to be bigger than their skill with styling implements!

Thanks to Nancy Lichtenstein for a great piece on the Chris Benz hair style look. Amazing– waves finally back in style and the disheveled look would be easy to achieve.
