Swarovski Fashion Week: Prabal Gurung Creates a Blend of Eastern and Western Influences

Prabal Gurung has a full plate, with his growing presence at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, in its first year being sponsored by Swarovski, and having won Fashion Group international’s rising star award this year along with Joseph Altuzarra.

Gurung's focus this season: "beautiful silhouettes that are electrified with Swarovski fractured crystals and beaded embroidery that toughen and empower each piece while maintaining a classic and timeless appeal.”

Gurung was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, but it was in India that his career began to take off. While attending New Delhi's Fashion Institute, he worked with several production and fashion houses and wound up designing with Manish Arora. Traveling around the world for seven years, Gurung finally landed in New York City where he interned for Donna Karan while attending Parsons School of Design, where he was awarded the “Best Designer” title at the annual Parsons / FIT design competition in his very first year. After spending time working with Cynthia Rowley, then moving on as design director for Bill Blass, Gurung has emerged as a cutting edge designer to watch, particularly for the celebrity contingent.

Prabal Gurung is one of those star designers who will evolve quickly. His talent is clear and he has created a clean design aesthetic mixed with a funky, edgy style that will make his clothing stand out, particularly on the red carpet. Already a favorite among celebrities, his ability as a designer is just beginning to flower.

There is so much more of which he is capable; this collection is the tip of the very large iceberg of his talent. The liquid double silk dress fits the body to create curves while minimizing any body flaws. Gorgeous!!
