Forget the Bridal Look: Getting into Lace for Day & Night!

Lace is a hot fabric right now and will continue throughout the year right into holiday. I started my collection last year and bought a couple of things, however there’s a greater trend now out there and so I am pulling a few trend-spotting pieces that show off the lace effect for parties, cocktail, and even some daytime looks.
While the LA Times Image section suggests you let your bra straps show, you might want to think about lace straps on them or buying lace strap camis (think Old Navy or Victoria’s Secret) for a sweet cover that even with a semi-sheer chiffon blouse would be a nice lacey accent.
From Anthropologie here’s a sweet number (with an equal $$$ to it)

Flouncy embroidered asters and a shapely, pleated bodice lend Plenty by Tracy Reese’s lacy frock a retro vibe. $298.00
From Nordstrom’s Brass Plum , this one isn’t quite as frilly or as pricy as the Reese edition,

Feminine lace overlays a slim sheath dress and adds a hint of retro inspiration, while ruffles highlight the dramatic deep V-neckline and flutter at the cap sleeves.

Nordstrom has this sweet top from Free People (doesn’t anyone do colored lace anymore? ) and it’s affordable ($68) and washable!

Sheer insets of contrasting lace in contrasting textures add undeniable allure to a lean stretch-knit top. Cotton/modal; hand wash. Retail: $68 (*and that’s a bargain for this top!)
Here’s a top that I think will push the point home that it doesn’t have to be sheer to be lacy. This vintage Ralph Lauren piece from an Etsy store is perfection– and it’s definitely my color.

This brown plaid shirt might put you off at first but if you think about wearing it with a pencil skirt or skinny jeans and a leather jacket, it might reallyl be something else entirely. The lace cuffs and the scarf create a different vibe and could be worn open over a cami.
A unique vintage style that not everyone can wear but it’s pretty unique and worth the affordable price tag
Alloy’s Miranda knit dress with kimono sleeves is adorable and has a lace inset on the back– popping a great look coming and going.

Retail is about $40!
From the sale section of Alloy is this really cute lace tunic banded at the hem in satin.

Available only in black, it’s now $20– and worth every penny. belt it for a slouchy, punked look.
UrbanOutfitters.com gave me a fit on the photos so here are some links
Kimchi Blue Lace Inset Tank
This $32 dollar cami is a steal and I would go with the nude look over the black. It’s definitely sweet but got an edge.
Pins and Needles Battenberg Lace Open Cardigan available in 3 colors and under $50, this cardi is perfect for slipping over a blouse cami or using as a partial top and using a brooch (aka BIG PIN) to hold it together in relevant spots. It’s definitely pretty
Fletcher By Lyell Silk Lace Blouse
This top is available in black and purple with the black lace. Go for the color. That’s the entire point– it’s not supposed to be suggestive but sweet with the edge. It’s silk so handle carefully but it’s under $70!! Check out the great skirt too.
Kimchi Blue Mixed Lace Tunic
This top is lace sleeves and shoulders and the rest is rayon/spandex/nylon. I have this particular top and layer it a lot and get compliments when I wear it with something unusual like a sleeveless sweater or a jacket over it. Hurry on this one because it’s clearing out.. and there’s not much left. I have the cream and find it immensely wearable. Black is nice too on this one because it’s not off-putting and would be dynamite with a grey pencil skirt .
Kimchi Blue Tiered Silk Lace Skirt
This tiered lace skirt would have to be worked sort of carefully for a conservative office but it’s perfect for hanging out on the weekends or going out at night. If you are a “creative” office person, then this would work brilliantly with the right tights and a great cardi and top.
Again, limited quantities because it’s on clearance.
Want serious color (and a more serious price tag)? Check JCrew for this really nifty lace cami
web-jcrews.jpg
For a perfect layering piece, this cami is fashioned of whisper-light silk and adorned with a wide swath of neon lace. It’s chic modernity when worn over another tank (think lacy straps) or provides the perfect pop of color when layered under a cardigan– or a body conscious jacket . Price runs about $170 dollars for this camisole (it’s beautiful but unless you have money to burn, buy a dress instead).
From Forever21.com
forever 21 lace front knit top 20.jpg
This sweet little tee works almost with anything. The short sleeve knit top features a see-through floral lace front that will show off your feminine personality. It also has a slub-knit back with an exposed back zipper, a round neckline, a relaxed-fit construction, and a finished hem. Retail- less than $20!
As I previously suggested there are other less trendy and less expensive ways of adding lace to your outfits and OldNavy.com has just the ticket.
old navy tank.jpg
With 5 colors to choose from including some brights, this less than $15 price tag won’t break your budget and it works well with other tops, sweaters, cardigans and jackets while going from office to jeans.
Saks Fifth Avenue had this amazing dress that was reasonable compared to the other items in their online store.
web-saks-pattterson-kincaid.jpg
Patterson J. Kincaid Greenwich Lace Tankdress smokes in this great dress. I love the look and for the sophistication it’s worth every penny of $138.00
It’s about being sweet without being overtly sexy, yet still creating an edge.
