Aqualung Kicks Off US Tour In LA 4/26 with New CD "Magnetic North".

Matt Hales AKA Aqualung kicks off a US tour here in Los Angeles at the Bootleg Theater It’s a trio of groups with Aqualung as the headline act on at 10 PM.

What’s interesting about this new CD is that it’s been 3 years since Aqualung has been on the road and it’s a simultaneous rebirth– a new evolution if you will — of Aqualung with a new vigor, attitude and feeling. Spring seems to be the perfect timing for that musical, creative and almost spiritual rebirth sort of feeling that going out on tour provides– as well as this new CD Magnetic North which seems to provide a carefully balanced plate of musical food to mentally chew on. The music is layered and the tune that is probably so evocative to the general public will be the Remember Us with Sara Bareilles that was featured on Grey’s Anatomy .

However don’t let that ballad– dark and potent– let you think that the entire album is that way. There is an effervescent, fun side to this man, this CD and his entire approach to the creation of music as well as touring. Fingertips is a great one to test drive!!

“Music can be an amazingly potent thing,” says Matt Hales, aka Aqualung. “When I sing into the microphone in the studio, I’m whispering my secrets in people’s ears. When it connects, it can be so powerful. It’s still a remarkable process to me.”

This is a podcast/phone interview done with Aqualung/Matt Hales this past Friday afternoon and it was an interesting chat– and he was extremely accessible and it was illuminating to speak with him about his musical and professional journey and how he manages to juggle the music, the tour, the composing and recording and the family too.

Definitely worth the money to buy the CD– not just download– you want this in the car too — or at least I do. I have scoured the sites to find enough of Magnetic North to make some preliminary assessment and it’s so different in feeling – much more upbeat and presents a Matt Hales that’s in a more settled, happier, comfortable space.
Don’t miss this show, It’s going to be amazing– particularly in light of the podcast content. Expect him to be around for a good long time– a thoughtful, careful composer, musician who’s about creating music, not just cranking out the albums for the $$$.
Thank you to Matt Hales for his time. I really appreciate that we could connect at the last minute.
