Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Hits DVD & Review

If you had a chance to see this in the theater when it launched, I am sorry you had to pay so much to see this film. It was presented as a more family film– which it is- -but it’s truly skewed to the male tween and while there is a token girl in the cast, it’s definitely a boy’s movie.

The basic plot is the basic backstory of the Greco-Roman gods: Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Hades, Athena. If you know your Greek mythology, you know what I am talking about. Gods often fooled around with mortals and had multiple children– and the children were left pretty much to fend for themselves. This is the case here within the movie based on the book series. I would think that the books hopefully were more gender non-specific but then again I am probably wrong. My friends with boys in that age group say that kids are addicted to these books and that they were at rapt attention during the entire movie.

Percy is a demi-god and is the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman. Zeus banned all god-mortal contact and thus Percy never knew his dad. He did have a best friend who was disabled but actually was a satyr who was there to guide and protect him. His demi-god powers were starting to come out and some things were happening like Zeus’ lightning bolt being stolen and thus everyone suddenly thinks that Percy did it. Why out of all the children these gods had would they choose just one?
