Teens with Kidney Disease Get Prom Makeovers from Celeb Stylists!!

For teens with chronic and often life-threatening illnesses, they often miss out on some of the most fun rituals of being teenagers- one of them being their prom. Recently there was an event that gave teens with kidney disease (often on dialysis) a chance to experience one of the rituals of being a teenager and feel “normal”!

Celebrity stylists volunteered their services to makeover young girls with chronic kidney disease for the 12th Annual Renal Teen Prom on Sunday, January 16, 2011.
Stylists:
Rich Magana, Hair & Makeup Artist
Vanessa Gbasa-Simmons, Hair & Makeup Artist
Joanna Barrientos, Hair Stylist of Toni and Guy in Santa Monica

St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California.
This was an opportunity for these girls who are on dialysis, pre-dialysis or with a kidney transplant to take off the hospital gown and put on a ball gown.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these girls to get their hair and make-up done for this amazing party by Hollywood stylists. St. Joseph Hospital sponsored several patients to attend the Renal Teen Prom. The prom featured special guest magician, Michael Grasso (“America’s Got Talent” finalist). Actor/comedian, Jack Black (“Gulliver’s Travels”) made a surprise appearance.

The Renal Support Network (RSN), who had nearly 400 guests from Southern California and from across the U.S., hosted the prom that was held at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California.

RSN (www.RSNHope.org) is a nonprofit organization that provides non-medical services and support to those affected by chronic kidney disease.

  1. Hi! Great article! My name is Kim and I am the one who took these photos. I was told there’d be a photo credit if they ran anywhere, but I don’t see one here. I am hoping you can add my name and link it to my website? That’d be very sweet! Thanks again!
