12 Drinks of Christmas: #6: Freixenet & Segura Viudas Deliver a Couple Sparklers Worth Drinking!

Looking past the Christmas holiday and digging down into what’s hot or interesting to drink, I keep coming back to spirits in various forms. The sparkling wines are always safe bets because they are light, mix well as a cocktail and also are a safe bet to pair with food.

Freixenet and Segura Viudas are sparkling wines made in the traditional champagnoise method and are light sparkling wines that work for any occasion (Who really needs an occasion? Celebrate your after-Christmas savings and scores with these wines.) Also these sparklers are affordable and get

Freixenet Cordon Rosado Cava cocktail recipes:

Red Christmas

7//10 Freixenet Rosado Brut

3/10 Cranberry liqueur

Pour the cranberry liqueur into a champagne flute or into a narrow wine glass with a nice sized bowl and fill with the chilled cava.

Authentic Pink Sangria–(Punch type recipe for a crowd)

1 (750 ml) bottle Freixenet Cordon Rosado Brut, chilled

3/4 cup strawberries, sliced

3/4 cup ripe peaches or nectarines, diced (good luck on finding ripe ones this time of year. Better try almost thawed frozen peaches or nectarines)

1 cup sparkling water

Half cup powdered or “superfine” white sugar

1/4 cup grenadine

Fresh lemon juice to taste

In a pitcher, mix fruit with sugar and grenadine and let stand five minutes.
Add wine and lemon juice and stir well.
Top with sparkling water.
Chill until ready to serve. Serve over cracked ice and top each glass with a scoop of reserved marinated fruit. Serves 8.

Segura Viudas Brut Rosé

Segura Setenta(“70” in Spanish, a take on the French 75)
1 oz gin (Bombay Sapphire or Hendrix works well)

1/2 oz simple syrup

1/2 oz lemon juice

Segura Viudas Brut Rosé
Combine gin, simple syrup and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake vigorously and strain into a champagne flute or tall, slim iced highball glass.
Fill with Segura Viudas Brut Reserva or Brut Rosé. Garnish with a twist of lemon.

Here’s another recipe of my own making. It’s a bit more on the tropical side but extremely do-able given that everyone has access to grapefruit juice and pineapple juice in cans.

Your choice: Segura Viudas Brut Rose or Freixenet Cordon Rosado Cava Sparkling wine– preferably Rose.
Pineapple Juice (frozen or chilled canned juice)
Grapefruit Juice– preferably pink or red juice if you can find it. (frozen or chilled canned juice)
Pom Pomegranate Juice with mango
Ice
Take a tall highball glass (over ice) or a flute and pour in equal parts of pineapple and grapefruit juice till the glass is about 1/2 full in a flute, more if you have a highball glass.
Pour down the side of the glass a couple of tablespoons of the Pom Mango juice.
Top off Segura Viudas Brut Rose or Freixenet Cordon Rosado so that it’s more like a sparkling juice drink.
Enjoy this tropical drink that’s not too sweet, not too sour.
