How Many Ways Can YOU Wear a Scarf: 25 Ways to Wear a Scarf by WendysLookbook.com

Ever buy a scarf and suddenly realize you haven’t a clue how to achieve the look you saw in the magazine– much less one that would look great on you? It’s happened to me when I am trying on these great scarves that I have dressed on a model who happens to be amazingly tall and I am more on the very petite side of the ruler. However give me a bit of time in front of the mirror with lots of great lighting and I can whip out different tricks. I was a whiz in high school and college and now I often do it for a living.

Here’s a great little video tutorial for 25 different looks on ways to wear a scarf– one is just as a wrap so that means these are typically a longer wider scarf. Check your scarf collection and see what works.

I don’t have all 25 ways down personally– but I recognized at least 12 that I have done and maybe a few that she didn’t feature (but that’s of little consequence). There’s a lot of ways to wear a scarf and you don’t need to have a ton of different scarves in different lengths– just the colors and patterns that work with your wardrobe. So play with different widths, lengths, patterns and solids. Also material and texture makes a difference– a chunky cotton works differently than boiled wool or cashmere. Don’t be afraid to riff on what Wendy has done in these videos– because you can’t go wrong if you find a different sort of look that works for you. Also you don’t have to spend a ton of moolah on these either. You can check out thrift stores, garage sales, your mom’s or grandmother’s closet, mass merchants like Target, your local fast-fashion store like Zara, MNG by Mango, H&M as well as online sample sales. Most of mine are very affordable and I found a couple at places like Cost Plus and mens stores. Think outside that box and get creative about how to find interesting scarves. Some table linens might work too– but you have to hunt that down.

Here’s a fairly recent photo of me wearing a scarf. I could have done a lot more things with it– but if you note the pattern on the long skirt (and realize it was a particularly warm day), I went with a less is more approach.

However when I had been wearing jeans with the top, I had a more complex scarf look (but I forgot to shoot that)

Some of these looks can be done with smaller squares particularly if you don’t have a long swan-like neck or are short. It’s about proportion here to make these looks work. So if you are a little on the heavier side, don’t get overwhelmed in a heavy texture with a complicated look. Instead go for a thinner wool with a smaller knit, pattern or texture and then try that complex look. OR try a simple look for that chunky knit. Find that balance of weight, texture and pattern that’s right for you!
