Plug Into “Pushing Upward” fiction of an LA Girl Using the IChing by Andrea Adler!

I get lots of books to read and it’s rare the book that captures my attention to warrant me to tote the book to various appointments or start skipping TV and phone calls so I can read the book. I found one recently that I became so enamoured with that I finished it in two weeks! I love to read and I switch back and forth between books often. Not so with the book “Pushing Forward” by Andrea Adler!

Synopsis

The year is 1974 . . .

This fascinating roman à clef takes us through one epic year in the life of 21-year-old Sandra Billings. While trying to eke out a living as an actress in L.A., she discovers the I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle; and uses it as her GPS to navigate a torrid love affair, battle with demons of the past, and search for meaning and truth.

After consulting the oracle, Sandra places an ad in the Los Angeles Times: Drama Student in Need of Rm and Brd in Exchange for Housekeeping. She encounters an assortment of outrageous and inappropriate individuals – but it is one unlikely stranger who will change the course of her life.

Interwoven throughout the deep, rich tapestry of this book are passages that illuminate Sandra’s spiritual quest and profound inner changes. The result is a stunning climax, where everything she has gained is challenged by a poignant and surprising twist of fate.

What got my attention was the ease with which Adler created a resonating story that elicited the essence of the 1970’s but seemed to fit perfectly into today. This book is a young woman’s rite of passage from being a hapless girl struggling to get her career in gear who morphs into someone who really has a bead on where she’s going and able to let go of the emotional baggage of her past (childhood, family and recent past). The locale is LA and it’s an eponymous Los Angeles that still shows off the stuff of smoke and mirrors to those caught up in the siren’s song of this city.

The characters are authentic as are the relationships that “Sandra” has with not only Emma but every other person seem to be more “truth” than superficial as we intuitively recognize not only some archetypes but also some people that we might know in our own lives.
WELL WORTH the read, the book moves quickly and is worth gifting to anyone in your life.

  1. This is a fabulous plot. I was a big user of the I Ching when I was her age..it totally works..the fox crosses the water, and his tail does not get wet..
