Thinking Outside the Box or Easter Basket: Great Books to Give for Easter, Mother’s or Father’s Day ! #Gifts #Review!

I don’t dislike Easter. I like having kids around to make it more fun since it’s a kid’s holiday. Easter bunnies, peeps, dying eggs and all that. However there are times when you need to give a gift– whether it’s Easter, Passover, Mother’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries as well as even bridal showers. Or things for guys that they might like and really- there is a lot in these 2 books: one more geared towards the baker; another one who wants to get adventurous with doughnuts. These are fun but serious books for those who really want to bake, cook and do fun things in the kitchen.

Eat More Dessert is a DIY/ “how to” book from an avid baker who has become the “baker to the stars”. Her passion for baking turned into a full-time career that she has been able to translate into a book that’s do-able for almost anyone.

A Standing Mixer! Do not think you can fudge your way through this without it! Some recipes require this!
An open mind and patience. If you are not already baking, there is a learning curve. Tip: Start with easy treats and cookies and work from there.
You do need a candy thermometer…REALLY!
Give yourself plenty of time.
Invite a baking friend over to help. It will help you gain knowledge and confidence
READ the book. Follow directions. This is NOT a book to riff the recipe until you have mastered it.

Everyone I know loves doughnuts! Yes guys scarf them up — and they vanish fast– I find that occasionally even I give in to a doughnut.
Here’s a book that can walk the beginning baker or the most expert through the mechanics of making YUMMY doughnuts!

With Homemade Doughnuts, Sublime Doughnuts chef Kamal Grant shows you how to make creative, delicious doughnuts in your home kitchen

Inside you’ll find:
The doughnut-making techniques you’ll need to master:
rolling the dough, cutting, hand shaping, frying, and more Basic dough formulas for yeast doughnuts, cake doughnuts, fritters, biscuit-style doughnuts, and pie crusts to fry.
Other things you learn include mouth-watering glazes, including Honey Glaze, Peanut Butter Glaze, and Lemon-Thyme Glaze; delicious icings including Salted Chocolate, Pistachio, Pink Lemonade, and Bourbon. It gets better with inspired fillings, including Apple Butter, Blueberry, Coffee Custard, and Lemon Curd Accoutrements to put your doughnuts over the top: Almonds, Balsamic Vinegar Reduction, Candied Bacon, and more.
Doughnuts aren’t just for special occasions, boardwalks, or carnivals: they’re for everyone!
Doughnuts have been inspiring and influencing cultures, regions, and religions around the world for centuries. Although the vision of the doughnut has evolved and been “fancified” by cart owners and Top Chefs alike, one thing reigns true: everyone loves a good doughnut. With step-by-step tutorials, Homemade Doughnuts will show you the basics of doughnut making, baking techniques, and practical problem-solving tactics for creating bakery-like doughnuts at home. From the classic to modern food art, this book provides the lessons for creating a gamut of deliciousness.

If that doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will. It’s absolutely incredible. However that said, the same sort of caveat regarding tools and equipment, reading and practice are essential for this cookbook. Get their list (it’s in the first 2 chapters of the book) and make sure you have it ALL. Read the recipes and look at how you can make these doughnuts. The writing, images and directions are perfectly clear. It’s very inspiring.

This book by Kamal Grant can be purchased at Amazon.com and all booksellers.

  1. Worth looking at both books if only to fill up on the information so that you don’t use it. However that said, there are some great tricks and tips on the Eat More Dessert (only the things she makes which doesn’t include pies or ice cream of any sort) easy-peasey sort of snacks that include rice krispie treats and using ritz crackers and peanut butter sandwiched together to create crispy things to dip into the candy melts.
fast, really easy and doesn’t require a standing mixer

  2. I can make it with a hand mixer, and do like to bake already. I take general ideas from books and then switch out some stuff to suit me..this book sounds like one with ideas I would like.

  3. Hey Pam!
If your mixer has a paddle attachment, you are good to go. This book uses paddle attachments on a standing mixer.. and for as much as I use a regular mixer, I wouldn’t pony up $300-400 for a standing mixer.
If you can make this work, share your hacks with me! Would love it!
