Green Bean Casserole Study! Say What? #Thanksgiving #sidedish #recipe

With 30 million green-bean casseroles set to appear on Thanksgiving tables today (and leftovers over the weekend), a recent holiday meal survey found that
“California is ranked #9 in the U.S. for love of green-bean casserole, according to the Del Monte Green Bean Index.”

In conducting this study, bean counters at Del Monte — the country’s prominent grower, distributor, and marketer of green beans and many other delicious vegetables — asked 1,500 Americans to “go green bean” and rate their fondness for the classic green-bean casserole side dish.

Easy Green Bean Casserole with Blue Cheese (courtesy of thewickednoodle.com

If your blue cheese is very strong, start by adding a lesser amount then adding more as needed.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 sweet onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup butter, divided
2 tablespoons flour
1 pint heavy cream
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
4 cans Del Monte FreshCut Green Beans, drained well
1 cup french fried onions, chopped
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400F.
Drain green beans in a colander. Allow to drain thoroughly.
Heat EVOO in a large skillet. Add onions and cook over medium heat until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, cook one minute more. Add 1/4 cup butter to pan, melt and stir into onions. Sprinkle flour over butter mixture, stir and cook flour for another 1-2 minutes. Slowly stir in heavy cream. Bring to a simmer, add blue cheese and turn off heat. Stir until blue cheese is incorporated (small pieces are okay). Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Gently add green beans to skillet and mix until well-coated. Pour mixture into a baking dish.
In a small bowl, melt remaining butter in microwave. Add chopped french fried onions and breadcrumbs, mix thoroughly. Sprinkle mixture over casserole.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until hot and bubbly and topping is nicely browned. Serve immediately.
Sounds yummy!

For those on a string (bean) budget, all varieties of canned Del Monte green beans are on a special sale this holiday season.

My question to each of you: was green bean casserole on your menu? What type was it: classic or a variation?

  1. Interesting that Kentucky is number one. One of the common varieties of green beans is Kentucky Wonder……AZ is not on the list, and I am not so surprised. I like it once in a while. This year there was a version of it at the vegetarian Thanksgiving buffet…it was good with everything else.

  2. I don’t do green bean casserole but there are enough variations on that link that you can have a vegetarian version or the craziest meat loving versions.
