Literary Scene LA Features 4 Authors at Inaugural Event During ArtWalk Thurs. 8/11!

If you are familiar with ART Walk LA, then you will be glad you read this post. A new literary salon will be holding every second Thursday of each month in Downtown Los Angeles during Art Walk . Titled “Literary Scene”, this new reading series that will be an exciting event each month – by integrating the art and culture of Los Angeles and its literary scene and taking it up a couple of notches with cocktails, nightlife,and hip venues throughout Downtown Los Angeles.

Books-&-Booze

The inaugural reading event on Thursday, August 11, 6-9 PM will have some of Los Angeles’ most critically acclaimed authors including Natashia Deon, Dana Johnson, Erin Judge and Iris De Ananda (more information below). They will each be reading their latest work and chatting with other writers and readers in an intimate setting about L.A. culture, activism, and of course cocktails.It will be held at the chic and hidden speakeasy, The Association Bar, giving it an intimate and laid back feel. Each reading will have a theme, August will be centered on being multicultural women in Los Angeles and the effect it has on their craft.

Dana Johnson
The author of Break Any Woman Down, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, and the novel Elsewhere, California. Both books were nominees for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. Born and raised in and around Los Angeles, she is an associate professor of English at the University of Southern California.

Bernadette Murphy
The author of three books of creative nonfiction: The Tao Gals’ Guide to Real Estate (with Michelle Huneven); The Knitter’s Gift; and the bestselling Zen and the Art of Knitting (2002) in which she uses memoir and reportage to explore the connection between fiber arts, creativity, and spirituality. She served for six years as a weekly book critic for the Los Angeles Times. Her personal narratives and essays on literature have appeared in The Rumpus, The Nervous Breakdown, Manifest Station, BOOK Magazine, Ms. Magazine, LA Weekly, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Jose Mercury News, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, and elsewhere. She currently serves as core faculty in creative nonfiction at the Antioch University Los Angeles MFA program.

Erin Judge
A nightclub entertainer who also writes literary fiction, Erin’s first stand-up comedy CD, So Many Choices, was released by Rooftop Comedy Productions in 2012. She tours nationally with the Pink Collar Comedy Tour, has headlined the Women in Comedy Festival, and has appeared on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Her work as a stand-up comic has been written about in the pages of The New York Times, Time Out New York, and The Boston Globe. Her writing has been featured in Salon, Thought Catalog, the Dallas Observer, and The Boston Phoenix, among others. Erin lives in Los Angeles and performs all over the world.

Iris De Anda
A writer, activist, and practitioner of the healing arts, and the author of CODESWITCH: Fires From Mi Corazon.She is a native of Los Angeles and believes in the power of spoken word, poetry, storytelling, and dreams. She has been published in Mujeres de Maiz Zine, Loudmouth Zine: Cal State LA, OCCUPY SF poems from the movement, & online @ La Bloga. She is an active contributor to Poets Responding to SB 1070. She performs at community venues & events throughout the Los Angeles area & Southern California.
