Contributor, Naomi Shaw Shares “Top 3 Off Leash Beaches In California & Travel Tips” + Infographic!

I love it when one of my contributors has a series of themed posts to share. Freelance (and fabulous) writer, Naomi Shaw returns with another post about you and your dog! This one is about the beaches in So. California where you can play with your dog off-leash.

Top 3 Off Leash Beaches In California + More Travel Tips

Untitled-1

I’ll never forget the first time I took my dog to the beach and let her off the leash. Watching her run across the sand, splashing around in the waves and just having the time of her life. Every five minutes or so, she’d return to where I was sitting on a blanket with this enormous smile on her face. Then a bird or other passerby would catch her eye and she was off and running again.

While there are dozens of dog-friendly beaches on the California coast, most of them come with leash requirements. But here are three that let your best friend run free:

I’ll never forget the first time I took my first dog to the beach and let her off the leash. Watching her run across the sand, splashing around in the waves and just having the time of her life. Every five minutes or so, she’d return to where I was sitting on a blanket nearby and she had this enormous smile on her face. Then a seagull or human passerby would catch her eye and she was off and running again.

As a naturally born curious terrier aka a “ratter” dog***, she scampered after anything and everything that scurried, slithered and flew, so the beach was an adventure beyond compare. Thankfully, there’s dozens of dog-friendly beaches on the California coast and most of them come with leash requirements.

Here are three that let your best friend run free:

#1 – Huntington Dog Beach

With the word “dog” in it’s title, you and your pet will have a blast at this popular, Southern California beach. Their website reminds us about the importance of bringing only socialized animals to this coastal treasure to reduce the risk of unpleasant incidences with other dogs. So feel free to bring your friendly four-legged friend out for an adventure in the sand.

#2 – Rosie’s Dog Beach

Another SoCal favorite, Rosie’s is a great place to bring your dog to romp around in the sun and surf. It’s run by The Haute Dog organization whose goal is to unite and inspire animal lovers in their common love of dogs. Enjoy free parking on Ocean Blvd after arriving at your destination to this wonder beach.

#3 – Arroyo Burro Beach Park
A little further north in Santa Barbara you’ll find this beautiful park that was purchased from the State of California by the county back in 1947. Not only do they allow dogs, they also offer a long list of other amenities that include nearby restaurants, trails, BBQ grills, picnic tables, grassy areas and lifeguards on duty.

Stevie’s Note: Where to find great dog beaches:

The great part is I live in Long Beach- with a great off-leash beach dog park, and I used to live down the street from it. Parking can be tough on weekends because while there is parking, it’s pretty much all metered -even the parking lots. You might have issues on the weekends, but if you can make it down to this beach during the week (that’s not a holiday!), you will find a lot more availability!

Thanks to Naomi Shaw for sharing this great post. She has the most interesting ideas! It’s an easy read and the infographic information is insanely great!!

  1. Great pointers for everyone’s sake here. My hound dog turned out not to even like the beach when I told her in San Diego. It surprised me. Most dogs love it. She did love car travel and enjoyed hotels and new places very much. I am glad we got to go many places with her.
