Summer = Swimwear! How to Deal with Bikini Area Grooming! Tips from Dr. Ronald Blatt!

Summertime is the time for hanging out by the pool and heading to the beach. Even if the only time you get to a pool is when you go on vacation, if you are a woman, you know if you are putting on a bathing suit, you are going to deal with some personal grooming of the bikini area. While some rely on waxing, not everyone can handle the cost of waxing treatments on a regular basis. Others can’t handle the pain associated with waxing. While laser removal of hair is the rage (particularly here in California), that’s a time-consuming (and costly) treatment that will require lots of visits. Plus there is discomfort in those treatments as well. The least expensive and more time – and wallet- friendly treatment for bikini-zone grooming is more of a DIY option with you and your razor. However that option is not without tricks either. It requires patience, a great razor with a fresh blade and your total attention. Since I have tried some of these treatments (not all), I figured that one person who knows the requirements of the delicate skin in the bikini area is a doctor. Today’s guest expert, is Dr. Ronald Blatt, NYC gynecologist and surgeon.

Dr. Ronald D. Blatt’s Guide to Summertime Bikini Area Shaving

Dr. Blatt commented:

“Your bikini area is a very sensitive. Shaving this area is probably the most convenient and least expensive alternative for most women but shaving the bikini area can cause ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and redness plus nicks and cuts.”

What is razor burn?

Razor burn is an uncomfortable and unpleasant-looking skin condition that can occur after shaving your vaginal area, legs, underarms or other body parts. Razor burn is pretty common and generally not dangerous, however, it can turn into Folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicles. Razor burn is generally caused by too much pressure on the blade. Only surface hair can be removed by a razor, putting more pressure to get hairs out that are deeper will not work.

What are razor bumps?

Razor bumps are small, irritated bumps. They happen after you shave, when strands of hair become ingrown (Ingrown hairs: strands of hair that curl back on themselves and grow into the skin.) That causes irritation and pimples.

Dr. Blatt explains how to counteract these bikini zone shaving woes.

“The area should be treated with products that will cleanse, gently exfoliate and reduce microbes. Also, moisture is needed to restore suppleness and prevent irritation.”

For this, Dr. Blatt suggests the PrivateRX duo of Cooling Pads and Soothing Serum. The PrivateRx brand of products was designed to shed light on women’s intimate skincare and female genital hygiene challenges, promote healing of these all-too common afflictions, and give women the comfort and confidence they deserve. This is a line that Dr. Blatt created after he created spa-level products for post-waxing treatment. Whether you are waxing, lasering, use cream depilatories or shaving, it’s wise to take care of your intimate skin area!

There is more you need to know about bikini area shaving! This is not a ‘hurry up and get it done’ process.
You can avoid razor bumps, ingrown hairs, redness, cuts, and nicks by following these simple shaving tips:

-Do not push too hard on the blade
-Do not use an old razor or share your razor
-If your pubic hair is outgrown, trim it down first
-Use a small mirror to help you see the area better (one that has a support so you can angle it will help)
-Wait long enough for the skin to get moist and the follicles soft before shaving
-Shave in the direction of hair growth instead of against it.
-Be careful that products such as shave cream do not enter your vagina
-Use tweezers to grab and gently remove any hair you may have missed.
-Shave at night. Our bodies regroup and heal during sleep.

Shave smart and do not rush the process.
You will you look clean and smooth in your bikini or swimsuit and as an added bonus, you’ll feel more confident when getting intimate too.

You will feel more comfortable and confident with these summertime intimate shaving tips from Dr. Ronald D.
