Here in Los Angeles, it is clearly fall and the weather has changed to match it. Suddenly I have replaced short sleeve tops, shorts and sandals with sweaters, jeans, and booties- just like many others who are in front of their mirrors struggling to find the right outfit or makeup to fit the new season. For those with a chronic disease– like relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS)– the usual and/or typical style frustrations may pose become more complex and full-on challenges. Since about 85% of those diagnosed with MS actually have Relapsing MS, that’s a HUGE number of people with difficulty in dealing with getting dressed and tasks due to stiffness, fatigue and /or mobility. (Imagine what it would be like to get dressed in a suit & heels if you have Relapsing MS! It’s quite a task.)
I recently had a chance to talk to stylist Jeannie Mai and Megan White who is a Relapsing MS patient. The podcast is down a couple of paragraphs!
Jeannie Mai, style expert and co-host of daytime talk show “The Real” has witnessed some of these struggles firsthand with her Aunt Linh, who is living with relapsing MS and has faced difficulty getting dressed and applying makeup due to balance issues and fatigue connected to her disease. Together, Jeannie and her aunt have worked on making small but impactful changes to her style and beauty routine, so Aunt Linh can still feel like her “best self” despite her limitations.
Jeannie is now hoping to share her style advice and inspire others through her involvement with Reimagine MySelfTM, a program for people living with relapsing MS that helps them reimagine life with the chronic condition. From quick style swaps to do-it-yourself zipper hacks, Jeannie is ready to share simple but meaningful ways people with relapsing MS can reinvent their wardrobe and style routine while staying comfortable and confident. The best part is that the Reimagine MySelfTM, site isn’t just about Relapsing MS but other people with chronic conditions that limit a person’s movements need help too.
What is MS?
MS is a chronic, often debilitating disease of the central nervous system that impacts 2.3 million people worldwide, often striking in the prime of life. Approximately 85 percent of people are initially diagnosed with relapsing MS, the most common form of the disease.
