Cinco de Mayo + Derby Day + Incredible Cocktail from Patrón = Ultimate Derby Day/Cinco Cocktail

The Kentucky Derby falls on Cinco de Mayo. Patron is celebrating this unusual alignment/coincidence with its Agave Julep. This wonderous cocktail is only available from May 3 to May 6 at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky! What exactly goes into a $1500 cocktail?
It kicks off with Patrón en LALIQUE: Serie 2, an exceptional extra añejo which retails for $7,500 per bottle.
Add to that Old Rip Van Winkle 25-year — a rare bourbon with a significant waiting list as well as price tag.
Rounding out the recipe is fresh ‘Kentucky Colonel’ mint, chocolate bitters, and caramelized demerara sugar infused with key lime.

This is one tasty cocktail and it’s only for the very mixology-obsessed person to want to create this incredible cocktail!

Patron Agave Julep

Ingredients:

2 oz Patrón en Lalique: Serie 2
.5 oz Old Rip Van Winkle 25 years
Floret of Chocolate Mint ( Mint leaves)
Bouquet of Kentucky Colonel mint, for garnish
3 drops of Chocolate Bitters
3 Key Limes
1 hand-made sugar rose
2 teaspoons demerara sugar
Sugar
Ice

Method

Caramelizing the sugar on the lime:
Cut the key limes into 2 slices, keep the ends.
Coat the key limes with sugar.
Torch the sugar until it is caramelized.
Place the key limes with the sugar on top of ice (caramel facing up).
Wait until the caramel solidifies (about two minutes).

Preparing the drink:

Place about 15 chocolate mint leaves in the julep cup.
Pull the caramel from the key limes using a knife, caramel should come up as a circle.
While cutting the caramel off the lime, let the juice from the lime drip into the julep cup.
Place 4 pieces of the caramel inside the julep cup (keep one for garnish).

Add a dash of water to the julep cup and gently press the mint with the muddler into the caramel allowing the mint to release its oils.

Stir with a spoon until the caramel dissolves.
Pour the 2 ounces of the Patrón en Lalique: Serie 2 and the ½ ounce of Old Rip Van Winkle into the julep cup.
Stir again. Crush the ice in a Lewis Bag.
Fill the cup with the crushed ice.
Stir until the cup freezes and refill with crushed ice as necessary.

Garnish cocktail with a nice bouquet of Kentucky Colonel mint and the remaining slice of key lime with caramel.
Pour the 3 drops of chocolate bitters on top of the crushed ice.
Place a straw in the middle of the mint bouquet.
The bouquet and the straw should be almost the same size, so when you drink the Agave Julep you can smell the mint).

Whether you are celebrating Derby Day or Cinco de Mayo or maybe BOTH, this is one gorgeous cocktail!
