Artists exhibiting include enigmatic contemporary African-American painter, Henry Taylor and Fran Siegel whose monumental drawings have been exhibited in LACMA, MOCA and Yale University Art Gallery. Boundaries provide us the physical and conceptual framework to delineate the idea of “self” from “other,” and “here” from “there.” However, boundaries contain an inherent paradox; as political theorist William E. Connolly succinctly suggests:

“Boundaries provide pre-conditions of identity, individual agency, and collective action; but they also close off possibilities of being that might otherwise flourish. Boundaries both foster and inhibit freedom; they both protect and violate life.”

In addition to the natural and traditional human geography (such as neighborhoods), the 16 artists featured in Here investigate LA’s internal physical and conceptual boundaries as a way to unpack the complexities of the City, exploring localized frictions to uncover these bounded and unbounded landscapes.

The compelling presentation is presented by The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) and Barnsdall Art Park Foundation and features works by talented LA-based artists – some of whom have immigrated to the City – exploring themes such as displacement, migration, race, class, state-sanctioned violence, LA neighborhood signifiers and architectural facades.

Here “runs from Oct 25, 2018 – Jan 6, 2019 with an opening reception on October 21, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
As one of the only remaining municipal galleries in the country, LAMAG has long been a hotbed for artists including John Baldessari, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Catherine OpieandAndy Warhol.
