New Documentary Reveals Psychiatric Disorders Challenging Donald Trump’s Mental Fitness to Serve

Director/Producer Dan Partland and Producer Art Horan have begun production on #UNFIT, a documentary that explores and gives voice to the mental health community’s dire concerns about the fitness of President Donald Trump.

#UNFIT follows the findings and assessments of a distinguished community of mental health professionals under the overall guidance of Dr. John D. Gartner, Ph. D, working in collaboration with the group, A Duty to Warn (http://www.adutytowarn.org), a grass-roots organization of mental health professionals who believe it is their ethical responsibility to  sound the alarm about Donald Trump’s dangerous behavior. Dr. Gartner also serves as Executive Producer of the documentary. Gartner says, “Donald Trump’s mental instability and severe psychopathology pose a grave risk to both to our nation and the planet.”

Since the introduction of the “Goldwater Rule” in 1974 by the American Psychiatric Association, mental health professionals have largely refrained from comment on the mental health of elected officials…until now.

Dr. Gartner says, “We are working with documentary filmmakers to amplify our voices and share vital, non-partisan professional perspectives with the public.” Why now? “We have no choice but to break our silence. Mental-health professionals are ‘mandated reporters’ with a duty to warn the community if there is a potential danger,” said Gartner.

“The Goldwater Rule,” refers to Section 7 of The American Psychiatric Association (APA)’s Principles of Medical Ethics, which states that it is unethical for psychiatrists to give a professional opinion about public figures whom they have not personally examined, nor from whom they have not obtained consent to discuss their mental health in public statements. The rule traces its beginnings to a 1964 article in the journal Fact, “The Unconscious of a Conservative: A Special Issue on the Mind of Barry Goldwater.”

“The Goldwater Rule is not absolute,” says Dr. Gartner. “We have a ‘Duty to Warn,’ about a leader who is dangerous to the health and security of our patients,” he says. Mental health professionals are “sufficiently alarmed that they feel the need to speak up about the mental health status of the president.”

The participants stress that the effort and the film are both non-partisan.

“Some have dismissed the movement as partisan politics,” Gartner says,  but, “this is not a discussion of the President’s political views or his policies. This is a discussion of what constitutes, mental, emotional and psychological fitness for office.”

Most controversial of all, many in this film hazard a psychiatric diagnosis of  Trump in accordance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), the industry standard.  According to these assessments, Trump suffers from a variety of possible psychological disorders, from narcissistic personality disorder to pre-dementia, all of which point to a chief executive who is psychologically unfit, despite his self-assessment as “a very stable genius.”

Dan Partland of Doc Shop Productions explains, ”

We are a divided nation, like no other time in recent memory. We need to put that aside long enough to listen to professionals as to whether we may have a clear and present danger, one that we underestimate at our own peril. #UNFIT takes the discussion out of the realm of political policy and into the realm of psychological science. As dug in as we may be, we need to hear out the experts, then draw our own conclusions.”

The producers’ Kickstarter campaign https://www.kicksarter.com/projects/1156678616/unfit-malignant-narcissism-comes-to-wash-dc-very-b would, upon success, help complete and release the documentary.
