Movie Time: Well Above Average Presents THE DEAL on DVD!!

Well Above Average’s Stella can dissect a film as fast as anyone I have ever seen. That she’s a screenwriter makes it a snap to figure out that she can break down a plot (and find the holes in the script) faster than anyone else I know. However when she spots a gem, she’s pretty much on her game and I follow her recommendations (for the most part.)

The Deal
hit DVD on July 29 and it’s a stunner of a movie according to Stella. This docu-drama is a sort of prequel to the movie The Queen, starring Helen Mirren.

What’s interesting about THE DEAL (starring Michael Sheen as Tony Blair — the yet to be Prime Minister) is that this is a prequel to THE QUEEN and talks about the mentoring of Tony Blair by Gordon Brown, then the Prime Minister of the UK. It shows off the delicate balance between the two different men– who are as different as salt and pepper — and how Tony Blair ultimately became prime minister. According to Stella (and most critics agree) Michael Sheen actually is immersed in the character of Tony Blair and is an exemplary figure as this pivotal historical figure.
According to Stella, there are substantial reasons to see this movie particularly in light of our own political situation.
The film revolves around the pivotal moment when Blair and Brown had to come to a decision and make “the deal” that would not only alter their personal and professional lives, but affect the future of British politics. It’s a particularly timely story given the recent Democratic primary. Although I don’t pretend to have more than a basic grasp of the political system of my own country, I found The Deal to be fairly engrossing, albeit lacking in emotional substance. It does, however, provide an insider look at the machinations of politics and public relations.

I think it sounds like a winner — and it’s going to be on my Netflix list. Hope it’s on yours and you might want to buy a copy just because the acting is simply stellar. It is an English film– do not expect a lot of emotional scenes. It’s done with innuendo and the traditional English way of dealing with things.
Check out what else Stella has to say about THE DEAL starring Michael Sheen on the Well Above Average blog . It’s definitely a must read!
