"Confessions of a Shopaholic" Hits DVD & Blu-Ray 6/23.

I had a chance to review the Blu-Ray version of Confessions of a Shopaholic. . While based on the book by Sophie Kinsella, it has very little to do with the book in terms of voice, style, or actual location which is the UK. That droll, dry wit that’s essential to that book and the UK mindset that really made the book hilariously fun and funny– is not present in this movie.

That said, if you take this film as a separate entity- a light, fluffy cupcake of a movie with tons of frosting but little cake, this is a fun flick to watch. It does give you the fashion over-dose that is sure to drive men nuts and girls wild.
This is the perfect DVD for a girls night– so crank up the cocktails and bring in the girls and order in some food and have a good time dishing on this movie. The Blu-Ray version is exceptional and the fine quality and detail in the movie is quite apparent.

Here’s the basic story as it goes:
Rebecca is a fashion junkie gone wild– flat broke she winds up giving financial advice to “everyman– and woman” in an accessible voice because the magazine she had worked for folded. (Oh my!! Sounds so totally relevant to today’s current economic situation) Unfortunately Rebecca doesn’t catch that while her spending has gone amok, she now needs to cut back because she really needs to stop buying on impulse and pay bills. Pursued by a bill-collector (to the point of showing up in person), Rebecca has various bouts of dealing with “shopaholics anonymous” as well as further sprees as she adores fashion and tries to transition to the fashion magazine of her dreams while realizing she is working with the man of her dreams.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure movies ) presents a lighthearted movie based on Sophie Kinsella’s best selling novels about a fashionista who would hock her soul for the latest Louboutin! . Confessions of a Shopaholic’s strong ensemble cast includes:
Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers),
Hugh Dancy (The Jane Austen Book Club), (cute! can I take him home as part of a goody…)
Krysten Ritter (What Happens in Vegas),
Joan Cusack (Friends with Money), (well-played, casted well past her current age)
John Goodman (Speed Racer), ( well-played, not sure he fits the age group but his characterization is spot on)
John Lithgow (Dreamgirls)

Kristin Scott Thomas
(The Other Boleyn Girl). (Not really French and any fashion editor would have had botox but she’s 1) beautiful, 2) real and 3) truly exemplifies the Ed in Chief attitude)
Directed by P. J. Hogan (My Best Friend’s Wedding) with a comic touch as light as the
rarefied air of the fashion world, Confessions of a Shopaholic also features costumes by iconic designer Patricia Field (Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada) that give New York’s Fashion Week a run for its money.

Behind the Fashion – A collection of insider peeks at the making of Confessions of a
Shopaholic, including:
o Wardrobe by Patricia Field – The renowned fashion designer takes viewers into her
studio and shares some of the secrets of her outrageous creative process.
o Temple of Shopping – The inspiration for Rebecca Bloomwood’s fashion wonderland
is finally revealed.
o The Green Scarf – Fans will learn more about the all-important accessory that drives
Rebecca to take desperate measures.
o New York Fashion Central – A style-centric tour of the home of more shopaholics
per square foot than anywhere else on the planet.

shopping mecca Madison Avenue.
I watched all the Behind the Fashion bits and it was fascinating. I loved the Patricia Field section and the green scarf section too. The Sample Sale Madness was fun and funny (and so true to life– honestly). Having shopped NYC enough, I know the window shopping, the Fashion Central and the Temple of Shopping sections quite well. The Bendel feature (Temple of Shopping) was really stunningly beautiful.
Totally fluffy and totally fun– definitely should be on your list!
