" The Betrayed" : A Unique Thriller that Doesn't Quite Make the Grade!

Just released on DVD is a thriller, The Betrayed. starring Melissa George, Christian Campbell, Alice Krige, Oded Fehr and more. This 2008 release just made it to DVD and am not sure this isn’t a straight to DVD because it sat on the distributor’s shelf too long.

Synopsis:

Waking up in a dark room after being knocked unconscious in a car accident and her young son nowhere in sight, Jamie Taylor (Melissa George) realizes that she has been kidnapped. Her masked captor (Oded Fehr) informs her that if she ever hopes to see her son alive again, she must help his mysterious employers. However, they’re not looking to collect a ransom; instead, the man reveals that Jamie’s husband is secretly a brutal killer who recently stole millions from his bosses. The organization will stop at nothing to retrieve the missing money, and they think that their captive is the one person who can help them find it. Chained to a grate in a cold, dark room with her marriage upended, her son’s life in jeopardy, and no idea whom she can trust, Jamie must attempt to piece together clues from the life she thought she knew in order to escape this nightmare and save the lives of her beloved family.

A trailer from The Betrayed
I was hopeful with Oded Fehr and Melissa George— both fine actors– and the rest of the cast which includes Alice Krige, that this movie would be a sleeper thriller. The official trailer tells you everything about the movie!! Bu However that’s not how the movie starts. You see nothing of the husband for about 50% of the movie (or more) so that the plot line is not clear, and the “trailer” tells you more and yet isn’t in the movie. What the heck is going on? I could have save myself 98 minutes of slow moving stuff and just watched that. Unfortunately, the plot moves too slowly and while the relationship between Jaime and her captor builds with interesting tension, there’s not real back story to tell you what or who to believe. The violence scenes and the scenes with the pervert/captor (who watches her showering) make some sense but in other ways– she’s aware of her location. Why is she doing what she’s doing? Jaime isn’t stupid but she’s not playing with a full deck.
Very odd movie. If you have nothing else to do, this might be an ok movie on a boring afternoon.
It’s available at all major retailers and also Amazon.com
