Style Expert Michael O’Connor provides these 5 tips:

The Emmy Awards are approaching quickly and as one of the last important red carpets of 09, celebrities will be working hard to get ready to face the scrutiny and judgment of the eyes of the world. Although we’re seeing fewer faux pas these days, it seems like some celebrities still are in need of a few fashion refresher’s. Here’s what I advise them to consider:
Make it work – in a good way!
A celebrity’s appearance and demeanor on the red carpet will not only be photographed around the world, it’s how they’ll be remembered and thought of by millions of people. If you don’t believe me, just look at Bjork at the 2001 Academy Awards! Who could forget that?
Tip #1 : a celebrity should always make the way they look count. Every detail will be examined, so it’s exceptionally important that every detail says “quality” and “thought”.
From the luxurious silk folds of the gown, to the way the makeup is applied, to the sparkle of their jewelry, everything has got to be the best of the best. More importantly, everything has got to work seamlessly together.
Tip #2. Beware the boring!
With today’s more simple style dresses, less beading and ornamentation, jewelry is the key to a complete look. Just as a present is never complete without a bow, no dress– or tuxedo for that matter– is complete without the final addition of fine jewelry. For men, a lapel pin or tie accent can spark a boring tux, particularly these days when longer ties eliminate the need for shirt studs.
Ladies shouldn’t be afraid to create sparkle and sizzle by layering a few jewelry pieces together to create maximum glam. Particularly with bracelets, one piece is nice, two is nicer and three is nicest. Don’t forget necklaces!! You can have great earrings but an open neckline cries out for jewelry!
Tip # 3 Every angle counts!
With all those flashbulbs going off from every direction, realize that’s it’s not just good enough to merely “look good” from the front. Red Carpet-worthy looks are well-planned out from every angle. If the back doesn’t look good, someone’s going to notice it – and talk about it.
For ladies and gentlemen, make sure that the dress or tuxedo fits properly. No bulges, stretched seams or strained buttons and zippers, please. By all means if there’s some design interest in the back of the gown or the back of an up-do, highlight it to show a little drama and some good fashion sense.
Tip #4 Create contrasts!
Nothing fades into the background faster than something that’s too “matchy-matchy”.
( Rememeber Melissa Leo who has gorgeous copper hair and sprinkling of freckles wearing a copper dress, makeup and accessories) . When putting an outfit together, everything shouldn’t be an exact match.
Create a splash with a brightly-colored handbag or shoes. If one opts for a simple and beautiful black gown or tuxedo, contrast it with the icy-whiteness of platinum and the dazzle of white diamonds. If a rich color is the choice of gown, pick gemstone jewelry that will contrast with the color of the gown, but not match it completely. Even when making jewelry selections, the pieces chosen don’t need to be an exact match. Create a signature selection by mixing and matching pieces that have a few similar elements. This kind of contrast will make the celebrity stand out from the crowd.
Tip #5 Own it!
From top to bottom, glamour and success are best worn with confidence. When wearing the best quality items that the world has to offer, wear them with style and a little attitude. Create an impression that will be eternally emblazoned in minds worldwide. In other words, be confident and let it show!
