Is Brazilian Blow-Out In Trouble?

Women’s Wear Daily is reporting that a Los Angeles-based producer of a popular Brazilian hair straightening treatment, used at upscale salons around the country, is being called into question by the Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology, a health and safety center housed within OHSU in Portland, Ore. The Oregon salon that sent the product in to be tested did so because the product had “caused difficulty breathing, nose bleeds and eye irritation in stylists using the product as directed,” according to the OSHA’s report.

Not only is Oregon concerned, but Heatlh Canada has banned the product.
The LA Times Image Section has run the story today.
There have always been questions about formaldehyde in these treatments. Going back to when Brazilian Keratin treatments first emerged, there have been questions about safety. LA-Story.com ran a post in 2008 about it.

The company in question asserts that because OSHA did not request a product sample from them directly, that the formulation tested and found positive for traces of formaldehyde was not their product.

So what’s a girl to do in this situation?

Celebnrity stylist Sam Brocato, has some answers.
“That is nonsense,” says Sam Brocato of the Sam Brocato Salon in New York City. “Salon owners are busy – we don’t sit around all day asking ourselves how we can, for no reason at all, ruin the reputation of the companies whose products we use. I personally had tested several keratin treatments that claim to be formaldehyde-free and guess what? I have results in my desk that prove otherwise.

“Unfortunately, many people do not realize that the truth is not always respected in this category. Our salon has made a formaldehyde-free pledge and we suggest that salon clients everywhere ask the same of their salon if they want to be sure they know what they are really getting.”

< The Sam Brocato Salon offers a truly formaldehyde-free straightening and smoothing treatment called Curlinterrupted. This patent-pending system is available at salons across the country and around the world. It offers temporary, semi-permanent and demi-permanent options, so it will last anywhere from one wash to 12 weeks. And while the system is meant to be applied in-salon, there are also Curlinteruppted Brocato products that can help consumers maintain their silky locks at home (whether or not they have had the salon treatment).

And brand new is Smoothing 2.0, a quick in-salon “smoothing blow-out” that leaves hair smooth and manageable for up to three weeks.

Curlinterrupted and Smoothing 2.0 treatments are available at the Sam Brocato Salon in Soho as well as hundreds of salons around the country and around the world. Brocato Curlinterrupted products are available at salons and online at store.sambrocatosalon.com.

Brocato makes a case for his treatment. I will be scheduling up an interview to talk about the ingredients and what people who have had any keratin treatment should know and could do about the formaldehyde issue..
