“The Most Dangerous Man in America” Hits POV on PBS!

During the Nixon White House years, Henry Kissinger once called this man ” the most dangerous man in America”. Daniel Ellsberg was that man. An administration man, Ellsberg was no outsider prying into top secret matters, but he was a Harvard-educated former Marine officer had done brilliant work as a Pentagon analyst justifying  expanded US presence and activities in Indochina  (now known as Southeast Asia) . The “Pentagon Papers” were a litany of betrayals and lies by several administrations–both Democratic and Republican–lying about the facts of the war. They  promised to work for peace while seeking a wider war  behind the scenes. They declared fidelity to democracy yet sabotaged elections, and exhibited a great  callousness to the loss of lives — both Vietnamese and American.

The New York Times became the first newspaper to begin publishing “The Pentagon Papers” on June 13, 1971, National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger told  his staff that Ellsberg was “the most dangerous man in America who must be stopped at all costs.”

Rick Goldsmith and Judith Ehrlich’s  dcoumentary, The Most Dangerous Man in America,  was nominated for   2010 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature and now has premiered on PBS’s POV series. This is a story of US history going back more than  half a century and it  incorporates people from that time as well as documentary audio, photos and papers. While the Pentagon Paers and the firestorm surrounding them  were a major tipping point in the US public’s disenchantment with the war and sealed the fate of the Nixon administration.  More than just a documentary about the government, this film takes any extremely intimate look into Ellsberg the man and his personal life.

Ellsberg was a man of conscious, exceptionally intelligent who wrestled with his conscience and what he rightly perceived as the contractions contradictions between American ideals and American  political and military tactics  in Southeast Asia.  Looking into how this affected him and his political morality,  Ellsberg was evolving and transforming from hawk to dove and his soon-to-be wife, Patricia Marx Ellsberg.
When Patricia and Daniel first dated, she introduced him to the anti-war movement.  Her view of the work he was doing for the Pentagon led to  their breakup. After his change of heart years later, he reunited with Patricia and together they faced the trial that might have sent Ellsberg to prison for life.

I had the opportunity to interview Daniel Ellsberg and Judith Ehrlich and it is shown below. Yes, I will say I was a bit star-struck in a way that typically never strikes me– because Daniel Ellsberg is part of history that changed the relationship of journalism with the government and more specifically the White House. I was talking to man who helped change the direction of the entire US government and that change is still important and applicable today.
While along with Woodward and Berstein were journalists, Ellsberg was a tried and true government man with deep roots in the military.

The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg & Pentagon Papers Documentary from stevie wilson on Vimeo.

This was not a casual story– but a serious change of direction of his entire life which separates his life story from Woodward & Bernstein’s in a very serious way. He was not paid to do what he did. He brought attention to the Nixon Administration in a way that routed Nixon from the White House. This is the story of a man taking a stand for something that he believed in and that was the importance of the truth to the American people. Within this interview, you will find references to CURRENT events where this still applies.

This documentary is available throughout the month of October on PBS website in the POV section. Please take the time to watch it–whether you were alive then or not– you will learn some things about the government that will open your eyes. It certainly did mine and my friends.

Thank you to Mr. Daniel Ellsberg and Ms.Judith Erhlich for their time.
