This essay/commentary/editorial was submitted by a reader. This is something SERIOUS! Here in California we have some pretty serious laws about texting while driving ($159 for the first ticket, $500 for the second) as well as driving and talking on a cellphone without a hands-free device. The important thing to remember is that hands-free doesn’t mean distraction-free though so the police hand out tickets for reckless driving since DUI doesn’t include cell phones. However maybe this commentary will make everyone wake up and take notice. It did me.
You almost killed me today.
You were on your cell phone and you never even saw me. Go ahead, try to convince me that I’m wrong, that it couldn’t have been you. (You’ve never actually seen anyone whose driving was impaired because they were on the phone, right?) You’re such a good driver that you don’t need to give full attention to your driving. And it couldn’t have been one of your kids behind the wheel either, because you’ve told them not to do it—and they always do what you tell them. I am not convinced.
What will it take to get you to stop?
Everyone has their price. Are you okay with a $100 fine, but less okay if it’s $1,000? $10,000? Are you okay getting a couple points on your license, but not so keen on having it suspended or revoked altogether? Can you afford to spend your weekends in jail? A year? Everyone has their price.
Admit it: You’re okay with strangers dying on the road, with other people’s children existing in a vegetative state or paralyzed or mutilated.
Admit it: You’ll probably stop doing it when it hits you close to home—when it’s your neighbor, your friend, your spouse or your child, when there’s an empty seat at your Thanksgiving table, family reunion or graduation. And I absolutely guarantee that you’ll stop when it’s you.
So tell me: What are you waiting for?
