Movie Madness: What’s Hot *(or NOT) in Theaters and on DVD!

Had TONS of movies I wanted to see but some where less than thrilling. Part of me actually listens to Mr. Moviefone on KABC 7 and I read the reviews in two different newspapers. (Yes, I read newspapers). Starting with the oldest movie seen first,
Looper, if you haven’t seen this, put it on your Netflix list and do get yourself into a theater ASAP to see this movie. It’s really worth seeing on the big screen. The plot is a bit sketchy and it takes a while to follow the plot but it does make sense and the ending will BLOW YOU AWAY!

Absolutely killer– in every way you can possibly. Ok some people didn’t like it but I liked Joseph Gordon Levitt. I like the trashy slut that Piper Perabo played. I liked Bruce Willis (and that’s a stretch based on the roles since Sixth Sense and Sin City). Anyway– once you nail down the plot (be patient or don’t be patient and read the reviews) and then go see it. The ending is a real mind-blower.

Ben Affleck is turning into quite the Clint Eastwood clone. He’s not only in the movie but he directs the movie. This was a quizzical pick for me to see because I was unsure if I wanted to deal with that time period of Iran and having lived through it, it was part of everyone’s life (the way the past election has numbed everyone’s brain to the point of wishing it were over sooner). Anyway since there was nothing out there remotely close to what I wanted to see (Taken 2– nope! Kids movies– not a chance). So off we went. I had read the reviews. Some were mixed but the chance to see Affleck play a serious character in a very serious situation and pull this off and with his cast being so great, it couldn’t go wrong– or could it.

Luckily for me, I loved it. It was worth every second. EVERY SINGLE SECOND of the movie, I sort of knew how it was going to end — BUT — this was a real life story and who knew what really happened since I hadn’t read the story or even did any research on it. The way the plot rolled out– the Hollywood stuff was ridiculously accurate- and the ending is such a great ending that I will not spoil it for you. PERIOD. Worth every buck I spent on popcorn because I was anxious about 50% of the movie about the ending. ( I swear I will never eat that much popcorn again!)
Bottom line, go SEE Argo!! It’s worth the money to see it on the big screen. Put it on your Netflix list because there are small nuances to the characters that need to be thoughtfully seen.

Recently I saw Flight with Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, John Goodman (wow.. 2 good roles in a row!) and the rest of the cast was stellar. Melissa Leo got a bit part that she dug her teeth into in the last 20 minutes of this film. Denzel Washington plays a pilot who drinks, parties and takes drugs to excess- period. There’s no way of getting around that. But through his skill and sensibility, he’s able to land a plane that was in a nosedive and would have killed everyone on board. While the 102 people on board (crew and passengers) went through hell on a flight that might keep those who are terrified of flying from boarding a plane, Whip’s actions in controlling the plane saved 96 lives which is pretty amazing. Yet part of the legality of the investigation by the NTSB is that they do tox screens on all of the crew.

The performances were stellar. The plot was pretty predictable and the story was a bit thready at times- -meaning I wish they had edited more. But Denzel pulled a brillant performance out of his pocket like he WAS the character. John Goodman was “Dr. Feelgood” and Don Cheadle played the uptight defense attorney and that’s just the known cast members off the top of my head. The rest were astonishing. The co-pilot and his wife were so very real in their portrayal of their characters. DEFINITELY a must-see. I know it’s a bit of a downer- that’s all I can tell you but eventually redemption occurs.

Saving the best for last on the movie front, I am writing this almost immediately after I saw the movie, SKYFALL, the latest in James Bond flicks starring the amazing Daniel Craig (who thinks his best features are his ears. Wrong!! It’s his eyes).

The theater was packed at 10:30 AM. I ate popcorn– but not nearly as much as usual because the movie was riveting. I love this kind of movie. It has a surprise ending. Javier Bardem is playing both sides — and you will know what I mean when you see the movie. The women are smart, beautiful but flawed and Bond nearly dies at least twice. So I would HIGHLY suggest you see this flick. Adele does the theme song and she doesn’t overwhelm, she plays it down and it fits perfectly with the spin of this film. I would love to have some of the clothes from this film. (damn the women look great- the guys even better). I love the new Q too. This is very much a movie for today’s world– and I am not just talking tech and computers. It’s captured the essence of the fear, the fragility of alliances, the duplicity and/or oblivious nature of those in government — and even within MI6. Bond is not outdated– if anything Daniel Craig’s Bond brings him current and ahead of the game of what’s got to be done. If I were to suggest one movie to see (and that includes the upcoming Twilight and some of the ones I haven’t seen or reviewed), this is the one that would resonate and make the biggest impression and I don’t mean special effects

On DVD, I have to say I haven’t been that successful with movies that were on DVD and I got them via Netflix.

Anonymous which I saw in theater and want to see it again if only for costumes and to see Joely Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave in the same movie. I love period movies– particularly that time period (My art history and literature background betray me here). Unfortunately the disk didn’t work. When we got In Time, it didn’t work either. (These disks were separated by about 2-3 weeks apart). Not sure what this movie will be like — but it’s worth 30 minutes to find out– otherwise it goes back

We saw Wrath of the Titans— don’t bother wasting your time! It’s not worth the effort unless you are sick or have kids you are babysitting and thus they will love it.

Man on a Ledge— I HOPED/wanted it to be good. It’s too strung out. The actual break-ins were well-plotted but the acting and the stuff on the ledge was “meh”. It was ok. Sam Worthington– you can do better than this.
