Get-the-Look: Katy Perry in “This is How We Do” music video

For Katy’s new video,This is How We Do,” we created more looks than ever before in a single video. All of the looks have a central theme…bleached brows with strong eyes and pops of color on her lips.

Brow bleaching is a fun and easy way to completely transform your look. It’s a very chic, editorial look and is best complimented with a strong eye or lip to avoid looking washed out. The pale brow draws all the attention to your eyes so it’s good to make the most of them.

Katy has such beautiful, big blue eyes, and this look really makes them pop. We had a lot of changes to make throughout the shoot, so I designed a look that could be adjusted easily to create entirely new looks without completely redoing the makeup. We are always pressed for time when making these videos!

First, I perfected her complexion using COVERGIRL Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation. I buffed a small amount all over her face and neck using a soft, flat-tipped kabuki brush. This spreads the foundation thinly and evenly to create a flawless airbrushed effect.

To create strong eye definition, I began by working COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast Eyeliner in Black Fire into her lash line. I lifted the lid a bit so I could access between her lashes and the waterline underneath for the strongest definition. I then went over the pencil liner with COVERGIRL Bombshell Intensity Liner to create the famous “Katy cat-eye.”

I added a pair of Katy Perry for eylure lashes in “oh my” and finished the basic eye look with a coat of Bombshell Curvaceous by LashBlast Mascara to combine her own lashes with the false ones and add extra impact.

For the karaoke look I used COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lipcolor in Flame and Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Fired Up Pink.

I then adapted the look for the ice cream truck scene by switching the lipstick shade for a fresh pink COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lipcolor shade called “Bombshell (third row, 6th shade from the left) and swapped the eye shadow to a shade called “Sapphire Flare.” (tenth shade from the left)

For the driving look (red lipstick dress), I added extra contour and highlight for maximum dimension and drama and paired it with a strong red lipstick (LipPerfection in Hot).

I added extra glow to her cheekbones and brow bones by using my fingertips to tap pearlescent liquid (cream( eye shadow (Bombshell ShineShadow in Ice Queen) onto her brow bones and ridge of her cheekbones to create concentrated highlights. This look reminded me of the work of Guy Bourdain, a legendary fashion photographer whose work defines 70’s era glamour.

The next look was the multicolored faux fur jacket. I complemented the outfit by switching her lips to LipPerfection in Yummy. (second row #1)

I added a strong line in the crease of her eyelid by applying COVERGIRL Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Molten Black with a small angled brush for dimension and definition. We kept this lip for the Ping-Pong look as well.

For the 60’s inspired look with the yellow dress and Vidal Sassoon style hair, I added extra eyelid crease definition using more “Molten Black” eye shadow. I then switched the lip color back to LipPerfection in Hot and added a row of lower false lashes to give it a strong 60’s vibe.

bathtub

I had the most fun doing the “bathtub” look. This was a 1920’s look inspired by Coco Chanel. This was essentially the same makeup as the driving look but with one major change. I used tattoo cover-up to hide her real brows completely and drew on pencil-thin brows above her natural brows to evoke the 1920’s “flapper” look. I then added a touch of Vaseline to her eyelids and brow bones for a dewy sheen.

Thanks to Jake Bailey for such an amazing beauty breakdown! He’s a fabulous makeup artist and very accessible to bloggers and those in media!

The product images I have used for illustration are the correct products but may not be the right colors. I had to use what I could get. So do check out the colors online or in your local mass merchandise or drugstore!

Do check out the variety of Katy Perry’s “looks”. You might not want to bleach your eyebrows though. It’s not to be done at home and should be done by a professional. The best way to test drive this is via Jake Bailey’s suggestions or to use a brow pencil or color in the same tonal family as your hair but LIGHTER.
