My Life in a Cardboard Box! Moving Is Such Hell! (Or Where Did My Makeup Go?)

If you haven’t caught up to me lately, then maybe you need to take a look at this post entitled “If I Seem a Bit Scarce, It’s with Good Reason. I Am MOVING!!”

moving-boxes

It’s been a while since I posted that– almost 3 weeks. However I didn’t move till a week after that was posted. It’s been almost 2 weeks since I saw everything packed up into a professional moving truck and delivered well into the evening hours when I got to play “traffic cop” directing the various moving people where to put furniture and rugs. It was easy directing the boxes because that looked organized! Because I realized that we had about 75 boxes, I had the movers put them in sections on the patio and in the yard! It might sound crazy to do that, but it was sheer mad genius to actually be able to get them to create “rows” of boxes so that we could figure out which boxes were essential to be indoors and which ones could stand to spend some time under a plastic tarp for a few days (or even a couple of weeks).

The move was harder than I had planned! The refrigerator in the house died the night we moved in! We had to hustle to buy a new one. Our washer and dryer was installed the day after we moved. Yet we couldn’t do anything with the washer/dryer stack since we couldn’t find any of the laundry products that we had packed. It didn’t help that the weather was blazing hot and we were going through clothing like mad too. The respite was that the place had AC which is great at night but during the day needed to be kept off when the doors are open because boxes– and workman– are coming and going. (Also AC dries your skin out at night too. Shoveling on moisturizer doesn’t do near enough. Anyone have any tips?)

The detritus of us madly unpacking. The search for the coffee maker was abated by the discovery of the Keurig machine. I did find some KCups carousel later in the day. WELCOME gift that was!

Inside the garage. The patio was PACKED with boxes! We stacked them 3-4 boxes high until we got down to the bottom.
There was ZERO room in that garage for 2 weeks!

I did hit the market twice in 3 days trying to buy what I couldn’t find. It was tough to do that since we wound up with duplicate stuff once boxes were found. Missing dog food & dog toys was a big deal. We were eating out daily and it got old fast. Because we looked a more than a touch bedraggled, I thought about cooking (rare feat that!) While I put together a great shredded beef in salsa, I no longer wanted to eat it. Tacos get old really fast! I think it was the accomplishment that my crock pot didn’t let me down. I am trying to figure out what to do with it.

MIA in the move was the following:
Coffeemakers x 2 (7 days to find this!)
Keurig machine ( 5 days to find this!)
Coffee- kcups (5 days) and regular coffee, 7.5 days)
Food: mislaid for a couple of days. Lost a box of bread and other refrigerated stuff too.
Linens for my kid’s bed (missing still)
My makeup cases ( 4 days for one, 10 days for another)
Nail Polish and other beauty products (still missing)
Office stuff (still MIA)
Dog food (6 days)
Jewelry and important papers (11 days)
My digital recorder (9 days)
The splitter I use to record podcasts (still missing)
Vacuum cleaner (not the newest one that died just before we moved, but the older heavy vacuum. MIA)

I still have boxes to unpack and it’s a hard choice when trying to organize closets. The dishwasher died too which is definitely an unwelcome surprise. Not only do I have to do regular dishes for daily eating by hand but all the stuff that is just now getting unpacked. I hope to have the dishwasher replaced “soon”. We also need to fix a broken diverter in the master shower.

We just had an estate/moving sale to sell off the excess furniture, kitchen items, exercise equipment that was not going to have a home. We sold just about 70% of what we had to get rid of. (Photos to come of the remainder of the sale. )
The things left unsold will be donated to Salvation Army and another charity. We have about 55% empty space in the garage finally (as of Sunday evening). We keep hoping to find things like missing linens, missing papers. I did find that I have about 10 boxes marked “office” I need to get unpacked and sifted.

However that sifting process might not happen for a couple of weeks due to other people coming in to do stuff around the house like build a fence and replace 2 gates (so that my dog doesn’t get loose and go roaming around the ‘hood as she has already done one time. Thankfully her collar has a tag and her name & phone number is emblazoned on the collar!) We had 2 trees removed. We have scheduled up a closet organizer company to handle the closets as well as the office since the desks we each have are too large to be useful. We are donating all the bookcases since no one wanted to buy them. Interesting that I could have sold our bikes 10 x over; the Magic Bullet blender (complete and unused!) another 10x over; my old hard case luggage, odd pieces of cookware, and a cheap Target dresser 15x over. The oddest things sold and we sold things for very little money. It wasn’t the money we needed (though it helps when one has to replace a dishwasher and a frig immediately). We needed the space. My new frig shows up tomorrow night. I have to wait before piling it full of food for the frig to get cold. (FYI: I never buy Whirlpool appliances after the ignominious death of the last frig I bought a couple of years ago. See THIS POST about the circumstances.)

I have been shopping like a mad woman to replace missing butter dishes, missing wine glasses and lots more. I have purchased new standing lamps, small things that we can’t find anywhere but use like wine glasses, cooking utensils, dish towels, batteries and lots more stuff. I bought a bed, mattress and new linens for the kid since we sold her bed. We got the mattress and linens fast enough but wondering where the bed is. Calling on that one on Tuesday. Most everything I have bought has been on sale which means I haven’t completely lost my marbles!

If this sounds like I am scattered, it is because I am. I am trying to establish a routine and it has the basics. It’s just the details that are driving me crazy. I can’t unpack my fragrances because my jewelry is in boxes. I can’t unpack my jewelry and hang it up on the racks I used in the other house because we have to paint the walls.

I promise I will have photos of the house as it goes through more evolutions as well as the remnants of the sale and the newfound space!

Stick with me. The best is yet to come as we go through paint swatches and I post photos of the lamps and decorations for things like HALLOWEEN !! Speaking of Halloween, while I have candy to give out, I need to stop eating pretzel M&Ms. Cooking is not appealing since we no longer have a BBQ and I need to find all the stuff I use to cook.

One good thing. I am sticking with working out. I have been doing it 5-6 of 7 days in the past 2 weeks. Also some of my best-est friends have been emailing, calling (and I can’t talk very long but they know I am alive). I just look and feel beat up. If you have any tips about which moisturizer or remedy for super dry skin due to air conditioning, please tweet or Facebook me.

  1. Good thing you found the dog. That is a scary way to learn you need a new fence. I wish you luck in eliminating as much as possible. I don’t envy you the move, but wish I could come out clean and clear from all my clutter…moving is the only real answer to that pile up, I think. Chin up, it won’t be much longer..

  2. Me too!! We had no idea that she had gotten out. She trotted over to a park near here (less than 2 blocks). Someone gave us a bid that day on fencing and gates. He KNEW we had a dog and didn’t shut the gates completely. So we were lucky (and a touch bit smart ) since she was wearing a collar with her name and our phone # on it.
