A mom’s journey to natural care of ADHD

Let’s start with a few truths. I love my son. I believe in science and data. I believe in natural wellness and reducing harmful chemicals in our lives.

How do you react when you get less than ideal news? Me, I try to gain a semblance of control by becoming an expert on the topic. A year ago, my 10-yr old son was diagnosed with ADHD. So I started reading, and reading, and reading. And I talked for hours to a pediatrician, a psychologist, a pharmacist, and many, many parents.

I found that the most common first step is prescription medication. However, this comes with potent negative side effects like loss of appetite, sleeplessness, depression, and aggression. Many kids on ADHD meds commonly take melatonin and anti-depressants as well. Medication does have a role in the treatment of ADHD, but it should be used prudently, after exhausting other options. The CDC agrees1. It lists therapy as the first treatment of choice, with medication added, as needed.

I spent months researching alternative treatments that are scientifically proven to be effective, have no serious side effects, and are easy to implement — perfect for the busy parent. Turns out, there are quite a few options. Here’s our experience.

Natural supplement
I spent weeks reading clinical studies. I finally found 12 natural ingredients that have been shown in 20+ independent clinical studies2 to significantly reduce the symptoms of ADHD without the serious side effects of medication.

I bought all 12 of them in as child-friendly a formulation as I could find and tried to give them to my son. It was an epic disaster. Some were capsules to swallow, some powders to mix into a smoothie. Of the 12, only 3 were tasty and easy to take. The rest are gathering dust in the back of the cabinet. So I started looking into how to combine them in a way that my son could take them.

I spoke to dozens of supplement manufacturers and finally found an amazing one who is GMP-certified3 (FDA Good Manufacturing Practice standards), based in California, and sources only the highest quality organic ingredients. Together, we combined the 12 ingredients into one single supplement. It’s just 4 chewable tablets plus a spoonful of omegas per day – in 3 tasty flavors that kids love. I started a company called FreshMynd to bring this supplement to market because if I have this need, so do many of you.

Packets

Our supplement is the only kid-friendly ADHD supplement to significantly reduce the symptoms of ADHD without the serious side effects of medication, and the only one to use the dosages shown in the clinical studies to have an impact.

Suplement-benefits

We designed our supplement (https://www.freshmynd.com/our-difference) with input from parents and kids and a pediatrician to ensure it’s tasty and easy to take. Because we’re all busy and I don’t have time to make a smoothie for my son every morning. A pharmacist has reviewed it to ensure it can be taken safely by itself or in combination with ADHD medication. Of course, you should always check with your doctor as everyone’s medical history is different.

We are doing a crowdfunding campaign right now to raise funds to get our supplement to market. If you believe it is a worthwhile goal to give millions of ADHD kids worldwide a safer alternative to medication, please invest in us. Visit https://republic.co/freshmynd.

Ways to work with  ADHD:

Essential oils
Vetiver has been shown(4) to significantly reduce symptoms of ADHD. You can dab it on directly if your child doesn’t mind the earthy scent, use a diffuser, or sprinkle a few drops on a diffuser bracelet or necklace that your child can wear through the day. There are tons of them on Etsy. My son hated the scent so dabbing it on was out. I now diffuse it sometimes at home. I haven’t tried the diffuser bracelet but many parents say it’s worked well for them.

Meditation
A study on mindfulness5 found that 78% of the study participants reported reductions in ADHD symptoms. Even 15 min of meditation a day makes a difference. You can do it anywhere, it’s free, and anyone can learn to do it. What’s not to like? It’s been a great bonding experience for me and my son to do 15 min together at bedtime. He has even started using it by himself as a tool to self-calm in times of stress or self-focus before a test. There are several great free apps available that offer all types of guided meditations. I can’t speak highly enough of the benefits of meditation, for yourself and your child.

Music
Believe it or not, there’s a research study6 that shows that certain types of music help the ADHD brain focus better. Play it in the background for 20 min before homework time. After I read this research, I made a playlist7 on Spotify of all the music that was shown to be effective. It’s classical music so it doesn’t distract my son, which, believe me, is not easy to do with an ADHD child. So create a free Spotify account and you’re on your way to better focus!

Exercise
Exercise has been shown in multiple studies8 to help alleviate anxiety, stress, depression, poor impulse control, and more. It functions much the same way as Adderall by triggering the brain to release more dopamine and serotonin. Regular exercise, even just 30 min a day, helps children with ADHD function better and offers lifelong benefits in general health and fitness. Kids with ADHD often don’t do well in team sports, so try things like martial arts, swimming, tennis, and running. My son did soccer for years and loved it but he would often end up standing daydreaming in the field while the other kids ran after the ball. He now does martial arts and adores it.

It is possible to manage ADHD in a natural and safe way, free of harmful side effects.
You don’t need to do all the things I’ve listed here. Try them and see what works for you and your child. What works best for us is supplements, meditation, and exercise. It’s more work than swallowing a pill, but it offers the added benefit of lifelong wellness and mind-strengthening habits. That’s a goal worth striving for.
