Make Valentine’s Day Special with Unique Cocktails from Ogden’s Own Spirits!

I love featuring cocktails. I look at the spirits differently because I want to try to find great ways to tweak popular cocktails by using new spirits and flavors.   Ogden’s Own Distillery is one of the newest brands I have discovered and they have an incredible line of spirits that you can play with.

Here are two cocktails that sound perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Disclosure:
I was sent samples of Madame Pattirini and Underground for me to try.  The only way I can tell you how great the brand is and how to best use it is via samples.  Without samples, I couldn’t tell you how great these brands are. The distillery is crafting unique presentations in various spirit categories that has me very  interested in the brand as a whole.   (Both are part of Ogden’s Own Distillery)  There is a lot of creativity in the spirits and also the presentation of the bottles.  It’s downright “intoxicating” when you realize that I love playing with new spirits in different ways.

Black Friday

Black Friday has an interesting spin! The featured spirit is UNDERGROUND, a  unique handcrafted herbal liqueur-ish type of spirit.

Technically a liqueur, Underground is different than most other liqueurs on the market. How? It starts with less sugar.  A liqueur is defined as having 2.5% added sugar by weight. Yet, shockingly, most of the well-known liqueurs exceed 20% sugar by weight. That’s a lot of sugar. Underground uses about half the raw sugar that other brands use. The difference is immediately noticeable as the lower amount of sugar creates a less-viscous, less-syrupy shot that doesn’t coat the your mouth with a sugar mixture that lays waste to the taste buds. Instead, with Underground, you taste the blend of 33 herbs, spices and flavors as they come through for a sweet, yet, complex flavor experience.

The flavors include a mellow blend of cassia, angostura, anise, cardemom, gentian, yarrow, wormwood, mate, guarana, ginseng, molasses, orange oil, lemon oil, spearmint, pure cane sugar, agave and plum.

At 80 proof (40% ABV), Underground Herbal Spirit is also higher proof than most liqueurs. Yet,most people who try it are surprised by it’s smoothness and even more surprised to learn it has a stronger alcohol content that what they are used to drinking.

With a higher proof and half the sugar, Underground is a great mixer in unique cocktails and shots. A simple cocktail Underground and cranberry, or ginger ale, are a couple of the local favorites.

Underground is more than a liqueur, it is a spirit with incredible versatility, complexity and taste as evidenced by its Double-Gold Medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and being selected as the Best Liqueur in the America’s at the Spirits of the America’s Competition.

Madame Marmalade !

The key ingredient in Madame Marmalade is Madam Patterini Gin! And the story behind this gin is wildly interesting.

Madam Pattirini Gin–  celebrate the wild times of Madam Pattirini Gin. The story is amazing!

Made from Juniper, Bergamot, Coriander, Cardamom, Nigerian Ginger, and Sicilian Lemon. It’s a small run of fewer than 1,000 bottles at a time. All bottles are numbered by the batch and bottle.

In 2017 Ogden’s Own began making Madam Pattirini Gin influenced by one of the more interesting and unknown figures of the West. Utah’s always full of surprises and has been a pretty wild place!

Brigham Morris Young (January 18, 1854–February 20, 1931)  was the son of Brigham Young and one of his wives, Margaret Pierce. In 1875,  B. Morris Young served a mission for the LDS Church in the Hawaiian Islands. Shortly after returning from this mission he was asked by his father to organize the young men’s association of the LDS church.

In 1883 Young served another mission in the Hawaiian Islands.

In 1885 Young, his wife and their children returned from serving his second mission in the Hawaiian Islands. Shortly after returning to Utah, Young began publicly performing in drag as a singer under the pseudonym “Madam Pattirini” – an Italian opera diva. Young performed as Pattirini in the north and central Utah venues from 1885 to the 1900s. He could produce a convincing falsetto, and many in the audience did not realize that Pattirini was Young.

He married Armeda Snow, a daughter of Lorenzo Snow. Their son Lorenzo Snow Young was a prominent architect in Utah. They had 10 children, eight surviving to adulthood.

Although no direct evidence [has been found] that Brigham Morris Young was a homosexual, he certainly crossed Mormon gender barriers. Seemingly without any negative repercussions, whenever he appeared in public as Madam Pattirini.
“From the 1880s to the early 1900s, Morris appeared frequently in his drag persona. His son, Gaylen Snow Young, wrote that ‘[h]e would sing in a high falsetto voice. He fooled many people.’ [Mormon historian] Dean C. Jessee notes that Morris was ‘often called to perform at stake and ward social functions, where he frequently posed as “Madam Pattirini,” a great female opera singer. An extant invitation lists B.M. Young as manager of “a Grand Character and Dress Ball” held in the large room of the Brigham City Woolen Factory in 1889.
