How to Pick a Good Watermelon: A Video from the LA Times Provides a Demonstration + Tips from Stevie!

I have been trying my own “testing” of choosing a good to great watermelon. Honestly, it’s “a thing” to do when you want to have watermelon- and my family LOVES it. I could easily buy a watermelon a week and have it gone before 7 days have passed. Ditto with pineapples but that’s pineapples will be covered in a different post!

I found that the thumping sound is key. I like a watermelon to sound deep thump sound than something that is shallower. Color and size is really important.
The size is important because I buy melons that aren’t the biggest things but they aren’t puny either. If the melons aren’t heavy, they aren’t going to be as ripe as larger ones. I have to be able to pick it up and put it into the shopping cart as well as from the cart into my car. I don’t want to worry that I will drop the thing as I put it on the conveyor belt or into my trunk. My goal is 10-15 pounds. In the last year, I have bought some terrible watermelons and some really great ones. In my experience, I have found is that a good melon should be darker in color overall. There shouldn’t be a patch that is very white or with “netting”. If you find one that has a lot of lighter spots on the outside, don’t buy it. You would find the interior is generally uneven and the flavor is lacking. My tips are derived from 4 years of buying watermelons and numerous conversations from various produce people at my local market.
