Myth#1: You have to be severely obese to benefit from weight loss surgery

Many people are under the impression that bariatric surgery is only an option for people who are hundreds of pounds overweight. In reality, it is a highly effective early intervention.

It is true that most insurance companies and clinics only approve bariatric surgery for those who are severely obese. They will also consider patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 35 and 40 who have developed an obesity-related disease.

A recent study by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, however, challenges these outdated guidelines. The study follows two patient groups undergoing bariatric surgery—one group has BMIs between 30 and 35, and the other has severely obese patients.

One year after the surgery, 36.3% of the patients with lower BMIs attained a healthy BMI of 25 or less. Only six percent of the severely obese group reached healthy BMIs. The study clearly shows that patients with BMIs between 30 and 35 are more likely to attain a healthy weight, improved quality of life, and remission of type 2 diabetes after bariatric surgery.

The qualifying criteria for weight-loss surgery at Blossom Bariatrics is a BMI between 30 and 55. This means our clients are generally between 50 to 100 pounds overweight. We believe in addressing obesity early before serious health issues such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea can cause permanent damage.

Myth #2: Everyone who has bariatric surgery regains the weight they lost

Mounting evidence shows bariatric surgery to be the best option for long-term weight loss. The procedure is not a quick fix, but it will enable you to obtain lasting results if you are dedicated. How much weight you lose in the beginning and how much you are able to keep off depend on your age, health, pre-surgery weight, level of exercise, adherence to dietary guidelines, and attendance at follow-up appointments.

Weight-loss surgery enables you to shed pounds quickly by altering your metabolism, but keeping those pounds off requires lifestyle changes in your physical activity and diet. According to a study in the journal Obesity, 200 minutes of exercise per week results in higher weight loss after bariatric surgery. In the study, active participants lost an average of 13.2 more pounds than inactive participants.

Myth #3: You’ll never eat normally again after weight-loss surgery

After bariatric surgery, patients experience a period of a few months known as the “honeymoon period.” During this time, you are likely to feel very little hunger and may even have to remind yourself to eat. We advise you to evaluate your relationship with food in these months. When well established, healthy habits will set you up for lifelong success.

In the days following your procedure, your diet will be limited to soft foods and liquids. You will soon be able to eat many of the foods you ate previously, but your diet will need to change. To enable you to maintain ongoing weight loss, we will teach you the importance of controlling your portions, prioritizing protein, and eliminating refined carbohydrates. In time, you will discover how to incorporate your favorite foods in moderation and as part of a healthy diet.

Myth #4: Weight-loss surgery is too expensive

Healthcare costs are rising, and obesity is at the root of many expensive medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, coronary heart disease, stroke, and even cancer. As you weigh the cost of obesity-related conditions against a bariatric procedure, you will discover the price of that one-time investment appears well worth it.

A study presented at the Brookings Institution calculates one individual’s lifetime societal cost of obesity to be on average $92,235. Most of the total is attributed to medical expenses, but the amount includes work absences, lost tax revenue, and disability payments as well.

When it comes to the myths related to weight-loss surgery, do your research and uncover the truth. As always, we’re here to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the experts at Blossom Bariatrics with any questions.
