Hotel Maya’s ‘Maya-Animals’ Experience Celebrates the ‘Lizard and Turtle’ on August 21

Hotel Maya presents its 12-month ‘Maya-Animals’ Experience program that highlights animals whose characteristics
the Mayans assigned to their deities during a Fuego Weekend Brunch

To celebrate the “Lizard and Turtle,” which are two of the Mayan animals most popular and powerful symbols in Mayan mythology and culture, Hotel Maya will host aTegu Lizard and Turtle” a real, live animal experience in the sculpture garden adjacent to Fuego for educational purposes and complimentary photos on Sunday, August 21 from 12-3 p.m.

In the Mayan culture, lizards were seen as a sign of fertility, harvest, and wealth. In mythology, the Mayan lizard god was believed to have created the Earth. Turtles were closely associated with a rain god and were said to weep when there is drought. Their tears bring rain but if a turtle is harmed, drought may ensue. In the Mayan creation story, an Atlas-like Maya deity who supported the world on his shoulders is sometimes depicted wearing a turtle shell.

In the spirit of honoring these powerful symbols of Mayan mythology and culture, Hotel Maya is featuring a different Mayan animal once a month during Sunday brunch from 12-3 p.m. The “Maya-Animals” Experience will include live dance performances, music, storytelling, animal demonstrations, lectures and many other exciting events for both kids and adults to enjoy.

“The live animal experience in Fuego further helps our guests and team members understand the important roles that certain animals played in the Mayan culture,” said Greg Guthrie, General Manager at Hotel Maya – a DoubleTree by Hilton. “Each month we offer a Mayan educational experience in Fuego.”

Guests and visitors are encouraged to Eat, drink and celebrate the Mayan Culture while enjoying brunch and visit the “Tegu Lizard and Turtle,” for reservations call 562-481-3910, 3910 or visit https://www.hotelmayalongbeach.com/fuego-restaurant or https://www.opentable.com/fuego-maya-hotel.
