I am an American. I always have been. I was born here and I have lived here all my life. I say this without shame because despite all the flaws we possess as a country, I would never choose to leave. I will always be an American and that is why I cannot ignore how I feel. I feel I am discriminated against every day.

Some may believe that a person of European descent has no right to feel that way. They feel we have wronged their people in the past so we should just “get over it”. The truth is that I have never been a racist. Growing up there are things that we have all been taught— things like “keep to your own” or “we are different” . But the majority of us have discarded such prejudices and changed our way of perceiving our fellow man (and woman too) for the better. Despite all my effort to show respect to people of color, the majority of them afford me nothing in return.

Example: Why is it the “black man” (or “brother”) is called such but somehow at the age of 27, 6 feet tall at 230 pounds, I am still referred to as “white boy”? Why is it acceptable that I am seen as different? By the very differences in terms, I am affirmed as somehow less masculine than a man with more pigment. Why is it that this fact upsets me makes people think I am overreacting? Are my thoughts and feelings somehow less relevant? Is it not racist to belittle another man’s stature because of the color of his skin? Am I not entitled to the same level of courtesy which I afford others? Or is this “white boy” simply not deserving of respect?
