There are many "sample" sales around So. California. Some claim to be samples sales–and aren’t. Others claim to bring a group of brands together to have a sale and you get a deal but it takes an RSVP and $$ to get in much less finding something you want to buy + the cost of parking. Where can one find the NYC vibe-ish sample sale here in LA that has great deals on great clothing and accessory lines ? Turn to Planet Lulu! This "roving sale" moves from LA to OC, SF, Seattle, AZ, and back again and even online to offer you some choice duds at amazing prices.
Recently there was a sale in the OC ( The Newport Radisson to be exact with excellent FREE parking and a huge tent with coffee, water and a HUGE group dressing area) and while I didn’t get there till just before the "closing bell" there was still a great assortment of clothing and accessories from shoes, belts, handbags, jewelry, super-premium denim (at prices that even raised MY eyebrows..) as well as the usual tops, pants, camis, skirts, intimates and lots more that would certainly make a nice dent in your wallet if bought everything you wanted. (uh… there were about 5 different denim brands distinctly calling my name.. ALL at less than 90 per pair. Hello???????)
Denim and pants from upfront.. the boxes all had MORE denim in them. This table was about 25 feet LONG–all full of pants (twill and denim)
There were 4 long tables full of past season high end designer handbags! This is what was left! Some people were buying four bags at a time (preparation for Mother’s Day)
Gorgeous jewelry. This table had 3 times the number of pieces of semi-precious and precious jewelry when the sale started.
This is but a small fraction of the styles that were available at Planet Lulu– many styles had sold out too.
If you know me (and read through this blog, you will realize this is where I started having trouble.. Heart beating wildly; rapid pulse, shallow breathing) There were at least 5 brands here that I have written about in my "how to find the best fitting jeans for your body type" articles (I have done 7 of them for different publications) There were some great styles and even juicier prices and some of these brands were seen at LAFW (hint hint). Again, prices were terrific and the selection was gi-normous!! ( I should have bought one pair. I should have bought 2 pair. I should have bought 3 pair. Getting the credit card to accept the impact of the dent– PRICELESS)

While I didn’t buy anything at the time (and with 15 minutes before they closed, it was hard pressed to a bunch of stuff into the dressing room), there was certainly some great items and deals to be seen. As Alli stated in the blog, the sale was huge; final tally was about 500 people. Lots of happy people leaving the tent and the area. I saw 2 girls each walking out with 2 very large bags of goodies.
For those of you NOT in LA but want that LA vibe in clothing– don’t fret. Planet Lulu does come to you in other cities. However in case you are farther out than the locales that PL’s crew travels to– don’t fret!! A couple of tips:
1) make sure you hit the sale EARLY — as soon as it opens
2) don’t stock the cart up and then check out–things sell out fast. Have the credit card handy and check out each time you find a couple things you want. They will combine all the items for you in ONE shipment with just ONE shipping charge.
3) Make sure when you get the shipment, to check everything carefully, don’t lose the receipt and if you need to return something, contact them for a return authorization.
The last sale had Theory, DVF, Tahari, a slew of jeans brands that I *had* to have, cashmere and tons of tops and skirts. SOOOOOOO cute!! I came in too late and found almost nothing left in my size.
The moral of this story being GET to the Planet Lulu online sale EARLY!!! Stay up late and shop! It’s worth the time and effort to have that effortless LA style for a fraction of what you would spend in retail stores.
