Our first self-wedding experience together happened soon after Bonnie’s mom passed away from cancer. Bonnie’s birthday came a few months later and needless to say she didn’t feel much like celebrating. A friend told us about her own self-wedding experience and it seemed like just the right way to honor Bonnie’s mom by looking within. We also wanted to bring healing into our community, many of whom were also going through their own significant hardships—relationships on the rocks, the economic downturn and illness. So we had a small self-wedding ceremony for all of the party guests to ignite good, positive energy. It was such a loving, powerful experience and it lifted everyone a little higher and made the path a little easier. The impact has stayed with us to this day.
Fast forward and about 2 ½ years ago we had a backyard wedding BUT with a twist. The day, the occasion was about celebration and love and we wanted our friends to feel what we were feeling. So we wrote special vows for our friends and made 120 sterling silver rings and after our ceremony was over, we married our guests to themselves. The laughter, the love, the genuine surprise in some at it being about them only, no one else was extraordinary. People who were there keep telling us even now, “I haven’t taken my ring off since your wedding.” “It holds so much meaning for me!”, “It reminds me every day that I’m special.”
We’ve done 3 or 4 large and small ceremonies since then and it remains so very powerful and fulfilling that we decided we wanted to keep spreading that feeling. Our dilemma was how to continue the movement so we could impact the most people. It’s taken us a while to figure out a sustainable model and here we are today. We think this is the perfect way and we look forward to growing this idea to bigger celebrations in as many places as possible.

WHY A SELF-WEDDING?
1) This is a live-like-you-mean-it moment that can be celebrated alone or with others who recognize the need for the love of self. We are, after all, fabulous!
