Contributor Naomi Shaw Shares “How To Prepare Your Home for the Holidays”! Ready, Set, GO!!

Alright, so Los Angeles isn’t exactly known for being holiday central. I mean, we do basically live in a desert. But, that’s neither here nor there. We see no reason why holiday cheer shouldn’t spread across LA, even if there isn’t  snow or evergreen trees in our Southern California forecast!

With a little creativity, the holidays around Los Angeles are on par with any East Coast city. It’s LA after all–the style capital of the United States. But today we’re not talking about fashion, though the holiday season brings no shortage of amazing outfits. We’re going to explore our inner interior decorator and break down some of our favorite ways to prepare your home for the holidays.

So get ready, because this is Christmahanakwanzika– Los Angeles style.

Stay Traditional
People say traditional is boring. Well, have you ever created a style that hasn’t changed for hundreds of years?

Just because we won’t get snow this winter doesn’t mean your Christmas tree and wreaths will look out of place.

Likewise, some Christmas lights never hurt anyone either. You can even get really creative with a few different colored light strings.
Who knows, maybe you’ll keep your lights up all year. Christmas lights can look really cool and complement natural light in your home.
If you don’t celebrate Christmas, it doesn’t mean traditional style is out the window.

A menorah can give your home a laid back, classy feel. Dim the lights and let the candle light flicker throughout your home.

Look to the Stars
Hollywood dictates fashion in LA, so why not check out some celebrity homes for inspiration this holiday season? A few years ago, Kendra Wilkinson teamed up with designer Laurie March to turn her home into a disco themed holiday dance floor.  Garland and bright ornaments paired with a white Christmas tree, and of course more than a few disco balls, turned traditional into something flashy.

Christina Milian also enlisted designer help for her holiday season, teaming with designer Charles Neal to create a clean, classy holiday theme.  White ruled the day in Milian’s main entertaining space. White rugs and white flowers matched with white furniture to keep up with the “clean” theme. Golden bronze stockings hung over her fireplace, adding a touch of elegance to the room.

Neal snuck a little bit of glam into the theme, with fur, feathers, and some plum-hued artwork reminding everyone that we’re still in Los Angeles.

Embrace The Heat
Los Angeles doesn’t get much cooler than 60 degrees in the winter, and we certainly don’t see snow. This gives us a luxury colder climates don’t have; outdoor decorations we can actually enjoy.  Sure, people in snowy climates decorate their porches and front yards, but in Los Angeles, we can spend time outside admiring our handy work.

Decorate your patio or balcony in whatever holiday theme you’re into. Then, have a holiday party outside so people can appreciate your decorations.  You could even have a decorating party if your friends are into holiday decor.

We know not everyone is into the holidays, but we think they’re a great excuse to go all out and revamp your home decor. There’s plenty of stylish influence in Los Angeles that works to give the holidays here their own special charm.

Get creative, look to the stars, and maybe borrow a tip or two from us to transform your home this holiday season.

Happy Holidays!
