It’s officially September and Fall Fashion is on the horizon! (Will someone please tell me what happened to August? I am still wearing summer 2017!). Cathy Habas returns with an interesting piece on trendspotting knitwear for 2017. Knitwear is a huge fashion segment for Fall 2017.
Popular Knitwear for Fall 2017
By Cathy Habas
Knitwear never goes out of style. It’s timelessly popular, with only the patterns, colors and overall styles ebbing in and out of favor with each season.
What makes knitwear so classic? Why do we continue to love it so much? The answer is perhaps deeply personal, but when the right yarn blends are used, knitwear is unbelievably cozy and comfortable. It’s also marvelously versatile: the stitches can be loose for a more breezy, summery feel, or they can be tight to keep out the cold during winter, and numerous textures and patterns can be achieved.
For generations, we’ve been including knitwear in our wardrobes, and yet we still might feel a little odd hitting the streets in our grandmother’s fashions. Here’s how you can stay trendy with a knitted wardrobe for the Fall 2017 season: focus on a loose, oversized drape and fun, funky designs.
Keep It Loose for 2017
Loose knits are in style for fall 2017. Avoid body-conforming designs or anything that looks like it was undoubtedly made on a machine. Choose knitwear with somewhat loose stitches and a baggy, oversized silhouette to give off the appearance of wearing a handmade creation.
Of course, fashions tend to be overdone on the catwalk. Flipping through images of runway models in “oversized” sweaters, for example, you may see that the sleeves are twice as long as normal and that the sweaters double as dresses. For a practical everyday outfit, make sure your sleeves aren’t as extravagant as those of the high fashion models– or at least plan to keep them rolled up and secured.
Pleats and layers of material are also in style, so play around with bunching the extra “fabric,” creating an accordion-like look on your sleeves, hemline, etc.
Saint Laurent: Red & Black Heart & Lightning Sweater (172418F096009)

60% mohair, 25% polyamide, 7% viscose, 4% wool, 4% polyester. Made in Italy.
Fun and Funky Designs Are In
Whether it’s the red hearts in a Saint Laurent pullover or the geometric angles of Laura Theiss’s collection (see dress below) , bold patterns, fun designs and eye-catching colors are trending. Anything that gives a shout-out to the bright colors and 8-bit style of 80s computer games is also popular, and it’s easy to achieve that look in knitwear thanks to the square stitches.
But it’s not just the 80’s that the latest fashions give a nod to; the 70’s are also receiving a throwback. Think about using the funky multi-colored stripe pattern for your knitwear, or mix and match patterns in muted tones like olive and goldenrod.
Go Beyond Sweaters!
It’s the type of challenge that you’d be faced with on Family Feud: “Name something that is knitted.” If you name sweaters, socks, hats or scarves, you’d likely be in the money.
But virtually anything that can be knitted is in vogue for 2017! You might need to shop around to find the following knitted items. Or, if you want to model something truly unique, you can try your hand at knitting (or crocheting) a design yourself.
• Dresses and skirts can be light and airy depending on the pattern and the yarn material.
• Vests help you create a layered look on warmer fall days.
• Boot cuffs are the perfect accent to help you repurpose the same boots for different outfits.
• Fingerless gloves let you show off your nail art while keeping you cozy on a fall day!
• Headbands can be knitted or crocheted into countless textures and patterns.
• Newsboy caps are the perfect accessory for men and women alike, and knitted versions look wonderfully vintage.
• Belts can be a quick DIY knit or crochet project for a beginner crafter or designer.
• Jewelry such as bracelets and necklaces can be created from yarn; flower patterns are especially easy to make.
Now that you have some ideas about how to incorporate knitwear into your wardrobe this fall, you can hit the streets in high style!
Happy shopping!
