5 Groups or Organizations Most Forgotten During the Holidays and How You Can Help!

You know you have someone on your list who you find is difficult to shop for gifts. While you might be at a loss on what to buy as a gift, there’s another way of gifting. Why not make a donation to a local charity on behalf of that person on your list?  Finding out the hobbies or interests of that person will  enable you  make a donation that would be in line with their personal interests.. or like many in California who survived the terrible fires, a donation to one of the relevant charities affiliated with the area where they live or to those emergency workers who helped  provide significant emergency services.  It’s a way to give back to the community at large as well as honor the recipient and the person in whose name the donation is made!

The holiday season is full of love, joy and coming together, but there are a few groups that don’t get to spend the holidays surrounded by loved ones and the holiday spirit. There’s never a better time to help those people who are often overlooked during this time of year. Over the holidays, here’s a few groups to keep in mind and ways you can give a token of appreciation and kindness to brighten up their season and yours:

Firefighters:

The International Association of Firefighters, which represents 315,000 firefighters and responders, is accepting donations for its Disaster Relief Fund. The 100-year-old organization uses these funds to help firefighters who are working on the front lines and their families in a variety of ways, from financial to emotional support.

Nurses:

Nurses House’s is to provide short-term financial assistance to nurses in need as a result of illness, injury, or disability. One donation can help nurses pay for such basic needs as rent or mortgage, health insurance or prescriptions.

The homeless:

Though a recent government report showed that elevated efforts by city officials resulted in a decline of homelessness in LA by 4.7 percent, the city is still facing a homeless crisis of epidemic proportions. One of the biggest questions facing Angelenos this holiday season is how to help. Saban Community Clinic offers Homeless Connect Kits that allows anyone to make a small but immediate impact in the life of someone experiencing homelessness. For a small donation, you can pick up a kit that includes essentials, such as bottled water, protein bars, soap, underwear, socks, and toiletries, but more importantly, they provide dignity to those less fortunate. The kit also includes access to a hot shower and Saban Community Clinic’s medical, dental, vision and psychological care.

Elderly:

For this growing population, there’s probably no better gift than the gift of company.   Elder Helpers is a user-friendly, web-based service in which volunteers register to offer their services based on their true desire to help elders.

Senior care can be one of the most challenging and difficult jobs for caregivers. Whether you are currently supporting elderly parents within your home or planning to assist from far away, looking into home modifications and aiding in their safety is vital.

Keeping this in mind, Todayshomeowner.com  created a free community resource that includes home modification tips by room, elder safety apps, and organizations that can provide financial assistance to seniors in need.  You can check out our guide: https://todayshomeowner.com/aging-in-place-senior-renovations/

Animal shelters:

LA Animal Services encourages the public to meet wonderful adoptable pets at any or their six LA Animal Services Centers. They’re offering reduced and waived adoption fees on our cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies this December 22nd and 23rd. If you can’t take a new furry friend home with you this year, the shelter has an Amazon Wish List with a list of items to donate.

This year, in particular, various parts of the country have had some major disasters: flooding, fires, hurricanes, mudslides and lots more. There are lots of agencies near you who would love to get a  few hours of volunteer effort or an in-kind donation of some sort.
