Facts + Fallacies about Whitening Your Teeth: YOU DO Want White Teeth for New Year’s Eve!

Have you tried those  ‘at-home’ teeth whitening kits? I am talking about the ones that want you to use a lighted mouthpiece to speed up the whitening process.

In the last ten days, a $5 million class action lawsuit was filed against Snow Teeth Whitening, alleging that their at-home whitening kit is “fraudulent.”

The primary gripe? The kit, which includes a whitening serum and an LED light mouthpiece, was tested in an independent lab, and the light was found to do absolutely nothing.

Snow Teeth Whitening is not, however, a fraudulent outlier.

“Multiple research papers have shown that lights have no significant, detectable impact on the efficacy of a whitening gel—at home or in office,” says Matt Nejad, DDS, a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills.

“The light used in an in-office treatment may temporarily dry out the surface of the teeth, and that may make teeth look a little brighter for a few days. But that’s it. The lights have no other impact on the whitening process,” he adds.

So, how did the lights become part of a whitening procedure?

“Clever marketing?” suggests Dr. Nejad. “It makes the treatment seem more high-tech. And a consumer probably won’t pay $150 for a whitening gel, but they may for an LED device said to improve whitening results. What they don’t know is the device is cheap, ineffective and probably made in China.”

Dr. Nejad’s suggested whitening strategy:
“Whitening gels can be useful in brightening and removing stains,” says Dr. Nejad.
For best results, Dr. Nejad says the gel must “come into prolonged contact with the teeth,” which is usually best achieved by using the gel in conjunction with custom trays created by your dentist.

Dentists can also prescribe a whitening gel with carbamide peroxide (as opposed to hydrogen peroxide, available in most retail kits), which can be safely worn for longer periods of time than OTC formulas, boosting results.

The bottom line on these “teeth whitening kits” is that you don’t need the lights to get your teeth whiter. It’s not the light, it’s the whitening gel.  You can save a lot of $$$ by not buying a kit with a light!
