Ole Smoky Distillery, one of the nation’s fastest-growing spirits companies, announced the launch of their small-batch premium whiskey brand recently with their first expression honoring family ties, James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
The 94-proof whiskey is
–aged in American virgin charred oak barrels,
—filtered utilizing the Lincoln County Process, passing through sugar maple charcoal before aging.
–Less than 200 barrels of James Ownby Reserve will be released this month,
–the flavor profile: rich, warm, deep caramel, easy-sipping spirit with a distinctly southern soul.
The whiskey commemorates the remarkable history and spirit of James Ownby – the 5th generation great-grandfather of Ole Smoky Distillery’s Founder, Joe Baker, handing down a family tradition.
“James Ownby lived a life so epic we still tell his tale to this day – usually around a campfire, and always around a bottle. As a soldier, he was dedicated. He enlisted at 17 and served six tours of duty throughout his esteemed military career. James fearlessly fought for our young country’s freedom, for his beliefs and for a better way of life. His most notable service came as a member of the renowned ‘Overmountain Men’ regiment under the command of Colonel John Sevier in the Battle of Kings Mountain – the battle which Thomas Jefferson fittingly deemed ‘The turn of the tide of success,’ in the Revolutionary War,” said Baker.
As a pioneer, he was prolific. James set down roots in East Tennessee in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains and built a life for himself and his family in the Greenbrier area of Gatlinburg. The Ownby family became known as one of the first families settling in the area and brought their knowledge of distilling.
“James Ownby Reserve pays tribute to my family’s heritage and legacy,” said Baker. “This new brand embodies our creativity and commitment to creating small-batch whiskey and the team at Ole Smoky is proud to bring the product to market.”
The James Ownby Reserve bottle and label design celebrates Tennessee with the state’s three stars found on the Tennessee State Flag, each representing the areas of Tennessee, middle, east, and west. It includes a personal message and signature of Joe Baker as he carries the legend forward through the whiskey created to honor his ancestor’s remarkable life.

Ten years ago, Joe set out to change the spirit game by opening Ole Smoky Distillery. With a 200-year-old family recipe, and a recently changed Tennessee law allowing the sale of retail moonshine, Ole Smoky was the first of its kind to hit the market and was met with a positive public response.
“We faced challenges from licensing, to scaling up, we were running out of product in the beginning, we had to hire more employees,” said Baker. “But truly my greatest joy comes from creating opportunity for other people.”
Ole Smoky is the most visited distillery in the world, has four locations in Tennessee and 18 different moonshine flavors to choose from – ranging from white lightning to apple pie to mountain java. Locals and tourists alike can’t get enough of Ole Smoky.
“One of the biggest reasons Ole Smoky grew like it did, it benefited from the millions of visitors that come to Gatlinburg every year,” said Baker. “When we started Ole Smoky, it was a retail store. Something I thought we would offer to tourists. They were having fun on vacation, they were enjoying our product, and then what happened was they would go back to wherever they were visiting from and they would want to relive that some way. The demand was driven by the people who had come and visited.”

My husband is a big bourbon fan and is pretty educated in great whiskeys and bourbons. We shared the sample and we both were
impressed with the flavor, mouthfeel, and overall presentation of the bourbon. The texture is quite smooth but it does have a kick
along with caramel notes and a great nose. We both liked it a lot. I loved the flavor profile. I would certainly feel comfortable sitting down with friends and sharing a bottle of James Ownby Reserve.
