Based on the messages and emails I get, it’s not uncommon to have problems when you are trying to do your hair yourself. Sometimes your hair doesn’t cooperate, or the weather changes how your hair looks (thanks to humidity) or you are frustrated because you are unable to achieve the hairstyle you are trying to achieve.  What’s a person to do?

Contributor Dan M. has some tips and ideas for you to think about when doing your hair!

Hair Care Tips to Include in Your Daily Routine

By Dan M.

The global cosmetic industry is valued at about $511 billion and skincare and hair care fall under this bracket. The numbers should not shock you because we all try our best to look good. First impressions are important, so we often don’t mind spending an extra dollar or two to look or smell great.

Therefore, cosmetology is a field you should want to join. People are constantly looking for hairstylists, barbers, estheticians, and nail technicians. All you need to do is enroll in a licensed school, complete your course, complete your training hours and then pass your state licensing exam.

To improve your chances of passing your test, you should take advantage of the free cosmetologist practice test available to you. These are mock exams to help you familiarize yourself with the exam environment and questions. This will increase your confidence so you get a higher score.

However, not all of us want to get into the field and become beauticians. Some people only want help with their skincare routines and hair care.

Natural hair requires dedication for that bouncy and beautiful hair we often dream of. It is not impossible; you can apply the following tips to help you with your hair:

  1. Regular Washing

We all have different hair types. However, one thing they all have in common is they all need regular cleaning. Washing your hair is crucial to ensure that you keep your scalp clean and free from excess oil and dirt.

The frequency of washing varies depending on the said types. If you have an oily scalp it is advisable to wash yours as often as possible. For those with dry scalps, twice a week is more than enough.

Remember to use warm water when washing for better results. Warm water opens up hair cuticles and pores on your scalp for easier cleaning of dirt build-up. Do not use hot water because it will dry out your scalp.

    2. Detangle

Detangling is essential for any hair. It helps with reducing hair breakage and keeps your hair healthy and strong. The detangling process involves:

  1. Wetting and conditioning your hair
  2. Dividing your hair into sections
  3. Detangling using your fingers or a brush
  4. Start detangling from the ends and work towards your roots.

It is advisable to use your fingers to detangle your hair. If it is not possible, use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair. However, you should never brush wavy hair because it will damage it.

 3. Regular Hair Trimming

Though it might seem against the goal of getting that beautiful mane you dream of, trimming works. Trimming helps get rid of split ends and tangles, therefore, making maintenance easier. Trimming your hair will also make it look more in volume since you cut off the end bits. You should trim it every 6 to 8 weeks to deal with split ends.

4. Hair Conditioning

Conditioning is the key to smooth, silky, and healthy hair. Conditioners work hand in hand with shampoos. Some shampoos even come with conditioners in them. You should apply your conditioner after your shampoo, leave it for a while, then rinse it off.

There are leave-in conditioners that do not require rinsing out. As the name suggests, you leave them in so they keep nourishing your hair. Also, deep conditioners exist. The conditioners are often massaged into the hair though some need heat treatment to work. Deep conditioners need time for noticeable results on each strand of hair.

You should condition your hair to keep it nourished and elastic. This will reduce breakage and give your mane a lustrous look.

  1. Moisturizing and Sealing

Moisturizing involves applying water to your hair. You can do this using water-based moisturizers. Aloe Vera juice works well, but you can look for some commercial moisturizers. Most leave-in conditioners also act as moisturizers.

The next step is sealing in the moisture. Sealing is done using butter and oils. The goal is to lock in the water that you added to your hair. Applying oil to your will not moisturize it. It only serves as a seal.

   2 .Protective Styling

It is vital to style your hair now and then. Styling will help grow your hair while also protecting it from pulling and breakage. Style options such as Bantu knots and box braids are great for protective styling. They also reduce overall hair tangling and lock in moisture.

    3. Good Diet

With the right nutrition, you can have healthy hair effortlessly. This is because hair growth is dependent on proteins and amino acids. Be sure to include eggs, fish, and nuts in your diet for better hair growth. You can also contact your doctor and ask about supplements you can take.
It is also important to stay hydrated. Internal hydration is just as important to hair growth as external hydration.

  4. Avoid too Much Sunlight

Sunlight is often beneficial when having a healthy body is involved but, extended exposure to sunshine has adverse effects. Apart from damaging your skin, excess sunshine will also damage your hair. Sunshine drains moisture from your hair and this, in turn, leaves your hair dry and weak. Making you susceptible to more hair loss through breakages.

To reduce direct sunlight, put on caps or hats when outside. It will significantly reduce the effects of sunshine on your hair

 5. Avoid Harmful Chemicals

You can grow good hair but easily ruin it if you are not careful about the products you use. Shampoos and the products you use on your scalp can damage your hair.

When swimming, use a swimming cap because chlorine has adverse effects on hair. Also, avoid shampoos with parabens and sulfates since they are more likely to irritate your skin and scalp.

Conclusion:

When it comes to your hair, you do not need to be a licensed cosmetologist to know you should take care of it. Develop a routine to take care of your skin and hair. It may not be easy, but after getting into the rhythm, it becomes easier.

Whenever you have any concerns about products to use on your hair, make sure you consult a professional. It will cost you less than treating damaged hair will.
