It doesn’t get any better than talking to Joshua Radin when he hits the Windy City in Chicago. If you missed him there, make sure you check the Hotel Cafe website or their myspace page — and Joshua Radin’s myspace page too for the latest 411 on where the tour bus is going to be next.
Talking to Joshua Radin is like talking to a friend –except you don’t know him. He’s easy, funny and not aWhat’s equally as cool is listening to his music. Intense–yet laid back; personal- but willing to share; distinct interior "life" –yet open, Radin’s music is all of these things and more. I tried to explain to someone that he has the Paul Simon lyric quality blended with some Art Garfunkel vocalizing –yet is distinctly current, cool and very much his own style.
He’s a musician with a sense of intellligence and sensitivity without being sappy. The We Were Here CD takes you on that emotional journey that he personally experienced and you hear the joy, love, infatuation along with the sadness, desolation, and pain. Not in chronological order, it starts out with Sundrenched — an awesome tune of awareness that she was not " hearing " him at all– appreciating the things that he brought to the table of the relationship. (oh that one hit home!)
Switching gears, once you get to talking to the man– it’s just fun! Yes he’s tired.. and touring is work, but he’s a trooper, an artist and and his accessibility is really unusual. There are not many actors, artists, musicians, designers, creative types put themselves "out there" in that manner.
Take a listen to my conversation with Joshua about how the tour is going and hot it is to be living/eating/breathing/working with a slew of other people 24/7. (Kudos to all of them for doing it.. especially Joshua and the Cary Brothers) .
FYI: some of the drops and clicks in the podcast are because I am on cell in LA at L’Ermitage and Joshua in on cell in a "quiet" spot a busy Chicago street– so blame it on the cell connection.
Interesting too is just how important the creative process is to Josh –whether it is in his painting or in his writing songs or in his writing comedy screenplay– he tends to do it privately. In other words, it’s hard to do on a bus full of people, noise and when you need sleep, sleep and more sleep.
Writing screenplays was easier because he knew what he had to write and sat down and did the scene–polished it and popped it out. Writing songs and music is an intensely personal expression for Joshua. He’s got his own rhythm and willing to wait for the perfect situation to get the notes down for his music. Hopefully –at the beginning of 2007 (or sooner if we are lucky) Joshua will have some material to head into the studio for a new cd. (All the more reason to talk to Joshua again!)
It’s wasn’t a heavy convo — we did laugh and joke around and he ran into Steve from the Weepies (whom I met at a Mandy Moore event and turns out that’s how I learned more about Joshua when I was talking to Steve and Deb from the Weepies–because they are on part of the Hotel Cafe Tour). I yelled out Hi and Steve said "hi" back. (It’s insanity when one realizes that sometimes there are less than 6 degrees between people. )
Note that the Hotel Cafe Tour reaches half-way point in Cape Canaveral in Florida and starts heading back to Cali… a direction in which Joshua is eagerly waiting.
