If you are living in the west coast, or east coast or parts in between, you might agree that our weather here has changed so much and that our weather is no longer predictable as it used to be with more tornados, flooding, rain, snow, and hail for longer periods of time. Temperatures in the deserts are hitting 120 degrees and winters are becoming lethally cold. One can call it climate change, others call it global warming.

The ice floes at both ends of the earth are melting and with it, the wildlife that ice floes support (polar bears, penguins, seals) is diminishing. Some people say that’s just evolution and that’s the way it’s always been. There are cyclical weather changes but never anything quite like what we are currently seeing: crops die off from excessive heat or frost; homes vanishing due to hail, tornadoes, and flooding. The actual events are typical, the amount of damage and the length of time of the weather occurrences are much greater than any that have been recorded.
So what are we to do? We can’t just throw up our hands and expect someone else to take care of this. This nation has become a collective of let the other person take care of it. Look in your mirror- that’s where the other person resides.
While you contemplate arguing about or accepting what I have said above, Neil Stawski of Climatewise.co is here to explain what climate change is and how you can make a difference. (Yes!, you can make a difference by changing a few things. Some of those changes might even save you money!) Plus you can use your social media skills and acumen to become a social media activist. Much more than social media for personal use, Neil Stawski talks about how you can use it for “greater good” and even cites an article (that you should read) that will give you tips and how to use your favorite platforms to give back!
Facts About Climate Change and What You Can Do As a Concerned Citizen
By Neil Stawski, Climatewise.co
There is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to climate change, with most of it coming from a partisan angle. Among scientists and the research community, there isn’t much of a debate regarding this pressing issue. The facts are that climate change is a man-made phenomenon, it’s happening right now, and we must make efforts on a local, national, and global level to combat its effects. Here are the facts on climate change and what you can do as a concerned citizen of Earth.
What’s the difference between global warming, climate change, and weather?
It helps to get the terminology right in order to understand the problems we, as a species, face. Though global warming and climate change are often used interchangeably, they aren’t exactly the same thing. Global warming is an overall rise in global temperatures, caused by the production and trapping of various greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Climate change is the overall, long-term patterns of climate that are, in part, affected by global warming. Weather is short-term changes in climate. It’s important not to confuse weather and climate. And yes, even if it still snows, global warming still exists. Climate change can, in fact, lead to great winter storms!
How do we know climate change is happening?
We can measure the effects of climate change in a variety of ways. We know climate change is happening because we can see it. The last decade has been the hottest on record. Global temperatures are on the rise. Sea ice is receding, causing a rise in ocean levels. We can actually measure the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and it has been on the rise for a hundred years. The oceans are becoming more acidic. We are experiencing extreme weather events like droughts and hurricanes at a far greater rate than we have in past.
Are humans the cause of climate change?
Yes. Scientists overwhelmingly believe that humans are causing climate change.
“Human activities have increased the abundance of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere, which a large majority of climate scientists agree is the main reason for the 1.5°F (0.85°C) rise in average global temperature since 1880,” notes Climate.gov.
The main problem is CO2, which is produced when we burn coal and other fossil fuels for energy.
“Other human activities, including deforestation, biomass burning, and cement production also produce carbon dioxide,” it says.
Can I really do anything to help stop climate change?
Yes! It is not a lost cause, as some would have you believe. One of the biggest ways human contribute to global warming is through the consumption of meat.
“University of Chicago researchers estimate that each meat-eating American produces 1.5 tons more greenhouse gases through their food choice than do their vegetarian peers. It would also take far less land to grow the crops necessary to feed humans than livestock, allowing more room for planting trees,” says Scientific American.
Ways You Can Help Stop Climate Change:
-Eating less meat is just one way to cut back on your CO2 footprint.
-Being conscious of your automobile output is another way. Opt for more fuel-efficient cars, and buy hybrid or electric vehicles if you can.
-Bike and walk to work when possible, and utilize public transportation whenever you can.
-Review energy usage within your home and make small changes that will not only reduce your carbon footprint but may also come with tax rebates or other incentives.

As one person you can do a lot – but it only goes so far. Awareness is another job of the environmental activist.
–
You can raise money for environmental causes and spread your message through merchandise, like t-shirt or bumper sticker sales, and fundraising.
-You can travel to areas affected by climate change and share what you saw with others.
-You can use social media to help keep those around you informed about the latest news stories about climate change.
Climate change is real, and we are to blame. We are also the solution. It’s your job to do what you can in your own life to reduce your ecological footprint, as well as to educate others on the facts surrounding this most pressing issue of our time.
