Cashmere on a Budget: Where to Get It and Evaluating the Quality

An interesting post I ran across on the web from the New York Post. by RAAKHEE MIRCHANDANI

CHEAP CASHMERE IS EVERYWHERE – HERE’S WHAT TO GET
Throughout the ages, cashemere has been the gist that says luxury, that says privilege, that says “See how much I spent on you?”
Until now. This year, it seems like nearly every store is offering an array of sweaters at decidedly populist prices – all $100 or less. But there’s no reason your giftees need to know that.
We woere, washed, wrung and wore again to save you – and your nearest and dearest – from the awful pillage. All cheap cashmere, it turns out, is not created equal.

Old Navy hooded babydoll tunic sweater, $70 at Old Navy stores
Pros: Perfect with leggings and Uggs or as a minidress with tights, this one wins our vote for the most stylish sweater. It’s hand-washable and so, so soft.
Cons: You have to layer – the V-neck is too deep and the sweater itself isn’t terribly warm. Also, it’s a bit pilly.
Verdict: We love it. The tunic style keeps it current, and it’s a lot of sweater for the price.

Isaac Mizrahi for Target shawl-collar ($90), turtleneck ($35), hoodie ($70) and bell-sleeve ($50) sweaters, all at target.com
Pros: Hoodies! Turtlenecks! And lots more. Mizrahi’s cashmere collection is as colorful as it is versatile. Plus, we only experience minor pilling even after wearing it around all day and hand-washing it in our bathroom sink.
Cons: It’s not as soft as some of the others, which means it works best if you like to layer.
Verdict: The hoodie wins, hands down – the only sub-$100 one we could find.

Maxstudio silk cashmere turtleneck and V-neck sweaters, $98 each at Max Studio, 426 West Broadway; (212) 941-1141
Pros: These sweaters are super lightweight and thus perfect for layering under bulkier, itchier things and keeping out the chill.
Cons: The color palette is too neutral and the silk/cashmere blend makes it feel like a luxe long-sleeve T-shirt.
Verdict: Good underneath. Not so good on its own.
