Good Grief, whip out the popcorn and start heading to the movies. Sony Entertainment’s
Across the Universe opens on Sept 21 across the nation and it’s definitely something unusual .
Ok.. check that. turns out that as of late today 9/19, the movie opening has been pushed back to 9/28. However regardless of the film’s debut date, we have something fun to give you in the form of a CONTEST!! So read on!!
Wondering what’s up that you haven’t heard about this movie? Originally scheduled for a 2006 debut, this movie from director/ creator Julie Taymor ( creator of the stage musical THE LION KING and the movie FRIDA starring Salma Hayek) along with THE COMMITMENTS writers, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais is truly an experiential sort of film. Some might love it, some might hate it and some will find it a unique experience.
Here’s the 411 as much as was given to me– and that’s not much.
Julie Taymor
The basis for this movie is theoretically and lyrically exclusively Beatles songs– so Beatle-manics unite, delight or fight what’s been done to their favorite songs.
Set in the 60’s with its anti-war protests, rock and roll revolution into mind-expanding psychedelics, Julie Taymor’s hallucinogenic musical follows the arduous journey of star crossed lovers Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood) as they and a small group of musicians are swept up in the raging waters of the volatile counterculture movement.
Guided through their journey by a pair known only as Dr. Robert (U2 Front man Bono) and Mr. Kite (Eddie Izzard), Jude and Lucy are eventually forced to find their way back to one another after being split apart by powerful forces beyond their control.
The music in the film consists exclusively of songs made popular by The Beatles during the time period depicted in the movie. (Yes the names are intentionally derivative)

BONO and the Beatles for Across the Universe TRAILER
What’s really interesting is that very little of the music is dubbed in post-production. That’s right boys and girls, these actors SANG on camera. Rachel Evan Wood got “If I Fell” nailed in her first take–which is saying something about the right on casting for the movie. There are other singers and actors in the film and whether or now they do a great job is up to you — because the reviews are mixed.
To commemorate the new film, Lyric Culture has designed a limited edition ACROSS THE UNIVERSE tee, featuring the lyrics to the song composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The shirt is sold on Lyric Culture’s website as well as Virgin Megastores nationwide.
