Nancy Lichtenstein has been featured on this blog before! She covered New York Fashion Week for Spring 2008 in 2007. Now she’s back again with a series of articles but this one particularly stood out in my mind.
Hair straightening is still the rage. Those with curly, wavy, frizzy, out of control locks often turn to a straightening treatment to get the looks shown on the runway and in magazines. However not all treatments work for all hair types. The Japanese system really on works well on coarse thick hair — like most Asian hair. When used on finer curly hair, it often causes more damage, breakage and heart ache than it’s worth. (*and I have seen it with my own eyes at the Ouidad salon for an editors’ meeting)
Now there is a new treatment that’s claiming to be the next best thing because it leaves hair glossy and claims to be natural because it uses keratin (a natural protein in hair and nails) for the basis. That is true — it does contain keratin. However it’s what they don’t tell you that’s going to get you into trouble as Nancy Lichtenstein has found out.
While it does do an amazing job on straightening hair, what’s the downside of this treatment?
According to Nancy Lichtenstein’s article on Associated Content, it can be potentially FATAL!!!
Why? How? Because the one of the more potent active ingredients is formaldehyde!!, the embalming fluid.
Want the rest of the scoop? Check out Nancy’s article for the rest of the details. This might be one straightening treatment you might NOT want to chance. It’s one thing to have damaged or broken hair, but dying for the sake of straight hair isn’t what you want to pay for– in any way, shape or hair style.
