It’s the end of the year and it’s been a rough ride on this roller-coaster of 2008. Not only has the economy been tough on us, but the weather hasn’t been any easier and thus it makes it tough on our hair too when we look in the mirror and realize that the lush treatments that cost 75 bucks at the salon just are not in the budget any longer.
Take heart– there are many brands out there that have GREAT treatments or conditioning lines withinn their brand and you can check out with your stylist about things from glosses to deep conditioning and what to use at home to keep your locks in good shape.
There’s even stuff you can pull out of your frig– but then again, that’s pretty messy so make sure you want to do all that. However I would highly suggest you hit your organic store for things like organic jojoba oils, massage oils and shea butter for some deep treatments that can really make a difference.
Since speed is of the essence because the big party is only a day away, you might want to deep condition at least 2 nights in a row to get your hair looking like it should and keep doing it once a week until it stabilizes and doesn’t look like it’s going to “snap, crackle and pop”
TOOLS Alert!!
1) Shower cap– found at any beauty supply or drugstore. Buy a couple.
2) a heat pack cap that you can nuke or several handtowels that you can soak and nuke as well. (The idea is to wrap your head in put on one shower cap, put the hot towle or pack on and if necessary to suppress drips, add in the other shower cap)
Also check craigslist.org, friends or family members for old bonnet hair dryers tha tyou can use. You are going to sit under the hair dryer for 20-30 minutes depending on the length of your hair. Use the time to read a magazine and let nail polish dry or a masque dry on your face!
3) If you are looking at the drugstore or beauty supply store, do check out conditioenrs for curly or ethnic hair as they have a lot more ingredients to soften and add shine to your hair. Curly hair has a great deal of exposed cuticle because it is curly and thus suffers more damage than other hair types.
Lines to check out:
Redken’s Real Control Intense Renewal Super Moisturizing Mask does amazing things for your hair– and you will be thrilled with how well it works.
For those who can afford Phillip B, he is the master of natural hair conditioning treatments. Howver inexpensive, he is not. However if you got the small travel pack and the hair oil, you can see dramatic results in 2 days (no lie!! ) and even more if you keep doing it. Two things to buy: the Travel Kit which is about $30.00 and will last a while providing you don’t go overboard on the use.
( Packaged in a versatile clear travel bag, you’ll find: 2 oz. Peppermint and Avocado Shampoo, 2 oz. African Shea Butter Shampoo, 2 oz. Scent of Santa Fe Shampoo and 2 oz. Deep Conditioning Crème Rinse.) Plus buy the Rejuvenating Oil— which is put on the scalp and hair dry– and left on for a good 30 minutes.
If you have $$ to spare then check out these two products that will surely leave a dent in your plastic but will leave you with glorious hair.. Check out this video
the Russian Amber Amino Acid Shampoo and the Katira Hair Masque. However this is a price sensitive line so if you can’t afford this, there are other lines out there to try.
Pureology has some amazing products that are naturally based and I use this Pureology Hydra Cure Intense Moisture Hair Masque typically about every other week– because I color my hair and it gets dry from all the diffusing that I do. It’s shower friendly (leave-in about 5 minutes, unless you want more intensive hydration– then try as much as 30 minutes) and you can get improvement in 5 minutes — but the longer the better.
Global Goddess SHINE Oil
Global Goddess Hair Oil is a fast — or long- treatment depending on how you want to use it. You can use it quickly in the shower — or be smart and apply the night before– and get this to really penetrate into your hair. It is washed out and then you put on conditioner lightly and you do have glorious hair.
Belegenza is an interesting new line that I covered over Emmys week and wow– is it every amazing. I found that they have an incredible line that has helped my hair get healthier and stronger. Here’s the RoMANce Deep Conditioning Treatment
WEN by Chaz Dean— has great ingredients and superlative 3 in one cleansing product as well as remoisturizers in different scents as well as a conditioning oil that you can leave in overnight. The different fragrances treat different hair types as well as just make a nice experience. It will penetrate the shaft and normalize the scalp as well.
Chaz Dean Wen – on QVC.com is a great line to check out and the entire line rocks. It’s pretty natural and he’s all about multi-purpose products.
Here are two other lines that I use regularly. I know that you might think I am crazy to recommend them because they are for curly hair — however here’s why I am recommending them — because they have more hydrating, strengthening , and natural ingredients that help improve the shine, the bounce and strength of curly hair. If you don’t have curly hair, your hair will benefit simply because you have used this product and it will last longer because you don’t have to saturate and leave it on as long. Straight hair doesn’t expose as much of the hair or cuticle to elements and thus doesn’t get as damaged. Those of us with curly hair have all sorts of damage because it’s the corkscrews and waves the expose more of the hair shaft to getting damaged– by color, hair treatment or by the environment.
I use Devachan out of NYC and it’s a great line. I do use the conditioner sparingly because the shampoo (no-poo) is conditioning enough that I don’t have to use a lot of conditioner on top of it. Leave the One Conditioner on the ends primarily and sparingly at the roots.
Also if you need serious conditioning treatment fast, try the Heaven in Hair— however I find that the One Condition works quite well with some heat and a mix of jojoba oil tossed in.
Jessicurl is a line similar to Deva Chan and it’s even more “natural/organic” than anything else I have featured. The Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner is rich in Shea Butter because it moisturizes, softens, and helps gives bounce to super dry hair. It also utilizes the beneficial properties of 14 different herbs and spices to help infuse hair with more botanicals.
One more curly line that I can’t forget, because it took me down the curly hair product road is the Ouidad line. The Deep Treatment really is “all that” in terms of conditioning, moisturizing and strengthening hair. It’s one of the best products out there and I have tried a *ton* of products– some not listed here because they are based on longer term use ( personal experience where I was conditioning 3 x a week for 3 weeks)
You can find many of these lines online or at beauty stores near you– including Sephora, Ulta, and other beauty supply stores.
