Tim Foster is a music industry dropout-turned jewelry designer with a big vision for his new company, Pennyroyal Silver.
Specializing in limited edition and custom designs created in pure silver, Tim draws inspiration for his designs and business directly from his passion for music and the 7 years he spent working in the marketing department at a major record company.

“Working at a record company was an amazing experience for a music lover like myself, but it was time to move on.” Pennyroyal is all about music and music culture. Even the names of Tim’s designs are loosely drawn from song titles. “I’m just hoping that people won’t figure out how to illegally download my jewelry!”

THE PENNY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

The spark that started it all came from Tim’s simple desire to make a meaningful gift for his girlfriend.

“I took a 1979 penny (my birth year) and just started pounding the hell out of it with a hammer and a smooth rock that my roommate used as a doorstop. I bent the penny into a crude shape, drilled a hole in it and that was it. There was something about the process of working the metal into such a meaningful design that was very raw and I loved it.”

For 2 years Tim honed his craft by making hundreds of pure silver pieces for friends and family while simultaneously developing the Pennyroyal brand and company vision.

“I didn’t know a thing about jewelry when I started. It actually turned out to be an advantage to not know the rules of jewelry design and jewelry business. It allowed me to work without boundaries. My new jewelry business friends didn’t always “get it” and my old music business friends thought I was crazy… That’s how I knew I was on the right track.”

“When I design a piece of jewelry, I think about it as if I’m writing a song. The most important thing is that it means something. Anything. Whatever I’m thinking about at the time and feel like putting into the silver. How pretty it ends up looking is secondary. I think imperfections are more interesting. Like Bob Dylan’s voice…. It’s raw and imperfect. The lyrics are what make it great and his voice makes it feel real. I want my designs to achieve that real connection with people.”
